Ben Affleck Says Robert Pattinson Is "Going to Do Great" as Batman

Ben Affleck had kind words for his Batman successor, Robert Pattinson, during a press event for Affleck's new movie The Way Back.

Affleck has always been kind to those who have played the role of Batman before him and is giving the same treatment to the one who is succeeding him. Pattinson is set to play the Dark Knight in 2021's The Batman. The actor took the role of Bruce Wayne after Affleck left it in 2017.

In an interview with Jake Hamilton, Affleck was asked about the script he wrote for The Batman and Robert Pattinson's casting. Affleck responded: "I think Robert's a great actor, he's going to do great."

Affleck later shed further light on why he left the project: "Kind of lost my passion for it. The movie deserves to be made by someone whose dying to do it and can't wait, and that wasn't me at the time, so I moved on."

Affleck was originally set to direct and star in The Batman, which would have taken place squarely in the DC Extended Universe. The star began his Batman tenure with 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and cameoed in 2016's Suicide Squad, before ending his run with 2017's Justice League.

He first left the director's chair in early 2017, citing issues with the script. Affleck later left the starring role as well, giving Matt Reeves the opportunity to reboot the character in a new direction with Robert Pattinson.

Affleck's stint as Batman came at a rocky point in his personal life. Trials and tribulations he worked through during that time curtailed much of his excitement for the Batman role. On the professional side, his time as Batman was also hindered in the re-shoot-ridden Justice League. The actor looked visibly different and uncomfortable in the re-shot sequences, making his ultimate departure from the role less shocking for fans.

The actor recently expressed his support for director Zack Snyder to release his three-and-a-half-hour cut of Justice League, which would have featured much more of Affleck as the Caped Crusader.

The Batman is currently shooting in Glasgow as Reeves revealed the first look at Pattinson in the new Batsuit. Also starring Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Andy Serkis and Peter Sarsgaard, the movie is due out on June 25, 2021.
