Former Donald Trump Strategist Blasts Beto O'Rourke's 'Beta Male, Metrosexual' Appeal

A former Donald Trump campaign data strategist claimed Texas Democratic Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke is liked by journalists because he's a "beta male" with "metrosexual" tendencies.

Speaking with Hill.TV Wednesday, Matt Braynard and host Krystal Ball argued over O'Rourke's public persona versus his potential private life. O'Rourke, who is running against Republican incumbent Senator Ted Cruz, had his masculinity questioned by the former Trump campaign worker, who was scoffed at by other panel members for asserting Cruz is somehow an "alpha male."

The term beta male is a derogatory phrase derived from ethology, or the study of animal behavior. The slang term is frequently associated with feminine qualities being present in a man.

"The media has created this character," Braynard told Hill.TV. "This likable guy, sort of this beta that they really want to see succeed. I think that's part of his appeal to so many journalists is that they want to see a beta guy like him succeed.... Metrosexual, beta, whatever."

Democratic strategist Jennifer Holdsworth said Braynard's commentary was an example of "toxic masculinity." The conversation devolved into Braynard claiming young millennial men—a demographic in which he sits—are "betas."

"His appeal of being hipster and young to try to convince people to vote for him is a very different approach than what Ted Cruz is doing," Braynard reasoned. "The appeal that he's created about being young and millennial."

"Young and millennial means beta?" Ball asked.

"Yeah, that's where I'll go with that," Braynard responded.

Braynard took to Twitter in continuing to bash the Texas Democrat, ridiculing O'Rourke as a hipster desperately seeking national attention.

"On 'Beta" O'Rourke: - Runs away from police when busted for DUI. - Can't express things ideas on stage without resorting to cursing/profanity. - Desperately seeking celebrity-level/social media 'hipness' rather than campaigning on issues. Immature = beta."

In a previous tweet Wednesday, Braynard complained, "So I get slammed by @krystalball for going after Beta for being immature/beta and then this happens..." including a link to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi questioning Trump's "manhood" over his proposed border wall.
