Beto O'Rourke Says Joe Biden Can Win Texas and Secure Victory on Election Night

Former Congressman Beto O'Rourke has suggested former Vice President Joe Biden could win his native state of Texas on November 3 and guarantee victory on election night.

O'Rourke, a Democrat, pointed to high turnout in early voting in the state, which hasn't gone blue in a presidential election since 1976, when voters there opted for Georgia's Jimmy Carter.

Early voting may be crucial in deciding the outcome of the 2020 as more and more voters choose to cast their ballots before election day. The numbers have already surpassed 2016 levels nationwide.

O'Rourke praised individual Texas counties for their high early voter turnout and shared tweets from those who waited in line to vote.

"If Texans continue to smash voting records, Joe Biden will win Texas & the election will be over ON ELECTION NIGHT," O'Rourke tweeted on Tuesday.

"No waiting days (weeks?) to count votes in Pennsylvania. If you want to destroy any chance Trump has to win or steal this election, then focus on Texas."

President Donald Trump has previously said the results won't be known on the night of the election and might never be known. He told a New Jersey rally on August 15 that voter fraud could play a role in a slow result.

"You know what? You're not going to know this—possibly, if you really did it right—for months or for years. Because these ballots are all going to be lost, they're all going to be gone," he said.

O'Rourke also pointed to recent comments by Jill Biden, the Democratic candidate's wife and former second lady. She visited El Paso on Tuesday and raised the possibility of the state turning blue.

"For the first time in a long time, winning Texas is possible," Jill Biden said. "Not only for Joe, but for the Senate and the State House as well, and if we win here in Texas, we are unstoppable."

"That's right! Thank you @DrBiden for coming to El Paso and to the Biden/Harris campaign for making Texas a priority!" O'Rourke tweeted in response.

If Biden carries Texas' 38 electoral college votes, it would leave Trump with a nearly impossible path to victory. A Democratic win there would also likely indicate a national landslide for Biden.

Poll tracker FiveThirtyEight gives Biden a 32 percent chance of winning Texas. In 2016, Trump carried Michigan by .3 percent, helping him secure the White House. That state had been part of the so-called "Blue Wall" of Democratic support. A Biden victory in Texas is highly unlikely but not impossible.
