BTS Thrills Their ARMY With Grammy Performance

Korean K-Pop boy band BTS thrilled their legions of dedicated fans in the BTS ARMY with their first official performance at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night.

The South Korean group delivered a high-energy performance of their English-language hit single "Dynamite," which was nominated in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category.

The song ultimately lost the award to Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande's "Rain On Me," but their live rendition didn't disappoint the group's devoted followers.

Tonight's energetic performance wasn't the group's first appearance at the Grammys. BTS previously presented Best R&B Album in 2019, which was won by H.E.R.'s self-titled debut LP. The group also made a cameo appearance last year during Lil Nas X's rendition of "Old Town Road," joining fellow guests Billy Ray Cyrus, Mason Ramsey and Diplo.

Fans across social media were ecstatic and showed their enthusiasm for the group, with some giving a shoutout to their favorite members. Each singer—Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—has their own devoted legion of followers in the ARMY, which stands for "Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth."

Members of the BTS ARMY were disappointed that the group didn't take home an award tonight, but many on Twitter still offered words of encouragement.

no matter what, the boys made history today and i'm so proud of them.

As one tweet noted, BTS still made history even in defeat.

The boy band's Grammy nomination tonight was not just their first nomination in a major category, but also the first time any K-pop group has ever been nominated in a major Grammys category.

"Major" is a key word here, as BTS were first recognized with a nomination for Best Recording Package at the 2019 Grammy awards—sadly, they went home empty-handed that night.

BTS missed out on eligibility for Album of the Year for their latest release, Be, which came out on November 20—as the official cutoff date was August 31, 2020. The pop group also recently released a Be (Essential Edition) with new packaging on February 19, 2021. The BTS ARMY will have to wait until next fall to see if the group will receive a nomination for the 2022 Grammy awards.

As the best-selling artist in South Korean history, BTS has sold more than 20 million physical albums globally. They also produced the best-selling album in the history of the country with Map of the Soul: 7. In early March, the group made history when they became the first and only Asian musical act to be named the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year.
