'Big Little Lies' Season 2 Casting Rumors: Who's Returning and Who's New

Back in December, HBO announced that Big Little Lies—its critically-acclaimed limited series that director Jean-Marc Vallée said would never get a sequel—was getting a sequel. Stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz would also all return for Season 2. Now, more than three months later, we know more about the next installment.

On Wednesday, the cable network confirmed a few more familiar faces will resume their roles when the show returns. Kathryn Newton, who plays Madeline's (Witherspoon) bratty and too-smart-for-her-own-good daughter Abigail, is back. Sarah Soklovic, who played Tori Bachman—otherwise the wife of the theater director Madeline was having an affair with—will return, too.

Also coming back is Dr. Amanda Reisman, played by Robin Weigert, who will likely be talking Celeste (Kidman) through the aftermath of her husband Perry's (Alexander Skarsgård) death. And considering all the speculation surrounding Perry's fatal fall, it's no big surprise Merrin Dungey will return as the prying Detective Adrienne Quinlan.

In addition to the Monterey moms, the (living) men of Big Little Lies Ed Mackenzie (Adam Scott), Gordon Klein (Jeffrey Nordling) and Nathan Carlson (James Tupper) will return as well.

It's unclear if Skarsgård's abusive character will pop up in flashback scenes, but Perry's mother—played by Big Little Lies newcomer Meryl Streep—will make her grand entrance in Monterey, presumably with her own questions about his sudden demise.

Streep isn't the only new face appearing in Season 2. Crystal Fox as Elizabeth Howard—Bonnie's (Kravitz) mom—and Mo McRae as school teacher Michael Perkins also join the case.

Kidman and Witherspoon will resume executive producer duties along with their lead roles. But the new season will see a different director behind the camera. Vallée, who directed every single episode of Season 1, decided not to return. Replacing him will be Andrea Arnold, who has directed the films Fish Tank (2009) and American Honey (2016), as well as episodes of Transparent and I Love Dick. She also won an Oscar in 2005 for her live-action short film Wasp.

The first season of Big Little Lies was based on the novel of the same title by Liane Moriarty. And although there was no sequel to the book, HBO confirmed Moriarty wrote the story for Season 2.
