'Black Adam': Everything We Know About the Rock's DC Movie

Black Adam now has a place on the DC Films release schedule, with the movie coming to theaters after The Suicide Squad and The Batman. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is set to star as Teth-Adam, a nemesis of Shazam and founder of Justice League precursor the Justice Society. The cast of actors set to play this group has been announced, and the plot they will be involved in has been teased.

When is Black Adam coming out?

Originally set for December 22, 2021, the movie was then taken off the release schedule in October 2020 when a host of DC Films movies were pushed back.

The film now has an official release date of July 29, 2022. This makes it the fourth on the production company's roster after The Suicide Squad (August 6, 2021), The Batman (March 2, 2022) and DC's Legion of Super-Pets (May 20, 2022).

The Rock wrote on Instagram in fall 2020, "once Red Notice wraps next month - I'll immediately roll into shooting YOUNG ROCK for @NBC. Then in the spring, we'll shoot the big one - BLACK ADAM for the DC Universe."

Then, the film's producer confirmed that filming would begin in April. Filming is set to be in Georgia.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is set to play the lead in the movie, after previously being considered for the role of Shazam.

Playing other members of the legendary Justice Society of America, meanwhile, are To All the Boys I've Loved Before's Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Mamma Mia's Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, One Night in Miami's Aldis Hodge as Hawkman and Trinkets' Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone.

Also set to star is Aladdin and The Old Guard star Matwan Kenzari in an as-yet-undisclosed role. The Rookie's Sarah Shahi will also star in the movie, though her character is being kept under wraps for now.

What will happen in Black Adam?

Though plot details are a closely held secret, some details are beginning to emerge.

At the DC Fandome virtual event last year, however, The Rock said of the movie, "What I can promise you is the Black Adam in my heart is the right one to root our story in, this origin story. He has his own sense of Black Adam justice...He is a ruthless keeper of justice, the judge, the jury, and the executioner. He will always do everything he can to protect his people, and more so his family."

Since that event, it has been revealed that the movie will combine scenes set 5,000 years ago with a modern story. This means we will learn how Shazam imprisoned Black Adam in the earth and then see his re-emerge in the modern world—though the Justice Society of America will be there ready to take him on.

Is there a trailer for Black Adam?

Though the film has not begun shooting, at DC Fandome a teaser trailer of sorts was revealed that saw The Rock narrating over concept art of the movie.

"Five thousand years ago," he begins, "Kahndaq was a melting pot of cultures, wealth, power and magic, yet most of us had nothing except for the chains around our necks. Kahndaq needed a hero. Instead they got me. I did what needed to be done, and they imprisoned me for it.

"Now five thousand years later, I'm free. And I give you my word, no one will ever stop me again."

In March 2021, meanwhile, The Rock posted a video that showed all of New York's Times Square with digital posters for the movie, as well as its newly-announced release date.
