Black Army Soldier Films Racist Encounter with White Customer at IHOP

A Black soldier who filmed his racist interaction with a white customer at an IHOP has gone viral on TikTok.

Joé Jeffers, Jr., of the Fort Belvoir Garrison, posted about the encounter to his social media accounts on Monday. He, along with some colleagues all wearing their fatigues, can be seen wrapping up a meal when an enraged customer approaches the table.

"Just so you know, I came back in to give [the waitress] the rest of the cash from my wallet because you guys are such s***bags," she announces.

"Ma'am, please walk away, please," Jeffers says. As he implores her to leave their table, the unidentified woman actually sits down at the booth, preventing Jeffers from exiting.

"Ma'am, can you just please leave?" he asks. Rather than giving an answer, she asks, "Because?"

Another customer at the restaurant approaches the table to try to help, saying, "You need to find another place else to be ... you're making a problem." She demands to know "is this [his] restaurant," and begins fiddling with Jeffers' cap on the table.

Jeffers ultimately has to climb over his booth to the adjoining one at the next table to escape.

"Is there a cop around here?" the concerned customer asks. "They need to get her out of here."

When the woman does leave the table, she goes up to other patrons at their tables asking, "Are you BLM? Are you Antifa?"

A second video confirms that the customer trying to help the soldiers is himself a retired Air Force veteran. As the soldiers leave the restaurant, she threatens the vet: "Motherf*****r, I will drop you. You wanna go? You wanna go?"

Director of Public Affairs at Fort Belvoir, Joseph Richard, confirmed to Newsweek that a situation between four Black soldiers and an unidentified woman occurred at their local IHOP.

"We are committed to fostering an environment of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in our force," he said. "A view of the video will show the Soldiers maintained their composure and military bearing throughout this shocking incident, they are well trained and disciplined."

This Is America 🇺🇸🤦🏾‍♂️ Racism Is REAL

Shortly after posting the viral video on TikTok, Jeffers updated his friends on Facebook about the situation. For the first several moments, he solemnly reflects, "This is America."

"Seeing it [in] the media is different, but when you actually encounter people who think less of you because of the color of your skin ... This is America," he says. "But this is the country we serve and defend. These are the people we fight for."

Jeffers added some more context to the interaction with the unidentified woman, explaining that she approached them with money for their lunch when she saw their uniforms.

"She came to the table and she dropped off some money ... she dropped $6 on the table," he says. "She said, 'This $6 is for the beautiful waiter who is gonna be serving y'all.'"

Shortly after she left, she returned asking where the money was that she left for the waiter, claiming to have left $30 for a tip. When they reminded her she only left $6, she allegedly told them, "You are lying, c***sucking n*****s."

Viewers on both platforms were shocked to hear what Jeffers went through. "What happened to respect our troops?" one TikTok commenter asked. "Those are the people you fight for. That also say they support our troops. But I guess it's only the white troops that they support," a Facebook friend wrote.

In a TikTok uploaded on Tuesday, Jeffers thanks his viewers for showing support and indicated "the situation is being handled," though it was not immediately clear if action was being taken against the woman in the video.

Richard confirmed with Newsweek that an investigation is under review.

"The Garrison Leadership Team and their Chain of Command have been fully engaged working with the Soldiers in addressing this incident," he said. "The Garrison has the incident under review.

"I prayed about it, I let it go mentally, it's out of my hands," he said. "My friend told me, he said 'Joé, it's not what people call you, but it's what you respond to.' Folks can say whatever the heck they want about you, but it's what you respond to that really and truly matters."

Jeffers even had a message of kindness for the woman from IHOP: "We pray it doesn't happen again, but wherever she is, if you're seeing this ma'am, it's okay. I forgive you. Let's just move on from this. Say 'no' to racism."

Richards noted that "at this time we do not have any specific information concerning this individual, who she may be or her motivation."

This is the latest in a series of racist interactions between customers in restaurants. In July, a man hurled racial slurs at an Asian family at a local eatery, even wildly saying, "Trump's gonna f**k you!"
