For the most part, Black Ops Cold War update 1.12 is focused on the Season 2 content. For those who haven't been keeping track, this includes the new Outbreak mode for Zombies, Apocalypse 6v6 map, FARA 83 assault rifle and LC10 SMG. For folks with a slightly more classic Call of Duty mindset, the reintroduction of Gun Game remains a welcome adjustment too. Out of all the new features at the start of Season 2, it's Outbreak that sounds most intriguing to us.

While the rest of Black Ops Cold War Zombies has been stellar thus far, Outbreak takes that foundation one step further by placing it in a large, open-world map. In that sense, even though a jungle-based 6v6 map sounds intriguing, it's not a totally new concept to the Call of Duty franchise. Outbreak, on the other hand, could potentially revitalize Zombies as we know it.

As for the rest of update 1.12, we're actually a bit surprised by how little has been adjusted despite the length of the patch notes. It's a bit strange to enter Season 2 without a single weapon balance change. In particular, the Akimbo pistols, Gas Traps and Stoner are way too powerful in the current meta, yet they haven't been touched at all.

The map tweaks are appreciated for the sake of player visibility, but everything else just seems like window dressing. Now that Scorestreaks are cheaper, we're also slightly concerned that these dominant rewards will become too much of a factor in tactical play. The Season 2 content is definitely great, but it'd be nice to see more balance tweaks in this update beyond that.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
