Bollywood Icon Amitabh Bachchan, Son Hospitalized With Coronavirus

Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan and his actor son have been hospitalized in India after testing positive for coronavirus.

In a tweet on Saturday, the 77-year-old actor said his family and staff had also undergone tests and the results were pending. He also urged anyone who had been in close proximity to him over the past 10 days to get tested.

Bachchan was admitted to The Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital in Mumbai, India's Health Minister Rajesh Tope said in a video posted on Twitter. He is in a stable condition with a mild cough and fever, Tope added.

His 44-year-old son, Abhishek Bachchan, wrote on Twitter on Saturday night that he had also been admitted to hospital after testing positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

"Earlier today both my father and I tested positive for COVID 19. Both of us having mild symptoms have been admitted to hospital," he wrote. "We have informed all the required authorities and our family and staff are all being tested. I request all to stay calm and not panic. Thank you."

Abhishek Bachchan's wife, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and their eight-year-old daughter Aaradhya have also tested positive for COVID-19, The Times of India reported on Sunday.

His mother, Jaya Bachchan, tested negative, according to the newspaper.

The Bachchans are acting royalty in India. Amitabh Bachchan, who is also a former politician, has starred in more than 200 films in India and also hosted the country's version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? He made a rare appearance in a Hollywood film with a role in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby in 2013.

His wife, 72-year-old Jaya Bachchan, is also a superstar in Bollywood, as is her son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Rai Bachchan, 46, is also known for winning the Miss World pageant in 1994.

Amitabh Bachchan revealed in 2015 that he had been receiving treatment for Hepatitis B for decades. He has said he lost more than 75% of his liver to the disease, which he contracted while undergoing treatment for an accident in 1982

He was appointed the World Health Organization's Goodwill Ambassador for Hepatitis in South-East Asia Region in 2017.

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in India neared 850,000 on Sunday, according to a running tally kept by Johns Hopkins University. The country has the third-highest number of cases in the world after the U.S. and Brazil. More than 22,000 people have died in India.
