Where Is Bonanza Creek Ranch? New Mexico Filming Location for Alec Baldwin Film 'Rust'

Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has died on the set of movie Rust after actor Alec Baldwin misfired a prop gun, according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department.

Director Joel Souza was also wounded and is said to be in a critical condition.

The incident took place on Thursday at a location in New Mexico where many Westerns have been filmed over the years.

Where Did the 'Rust' Incident Occur?

Baldwin and the production team were filming Rust at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, in the desert outside Santa Fe.

The set has been shut down as the authorities investigate.

The Bonanza Creek Ranch has been used as a filming location since the 1950s. The Man From Laramie starring Jimmy Stewart was filmed there and it was also used for Blazing Saddles, Only the Brave, Cowboys & Aliens, the 3:10 to Yuma remake and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

The ranch's website lists multiple sets that have been used for filming over the years. These include a mountain homestead, prairie homestead, pond house, village homestead and fort. The website also highlights the site's natural features, such as ponds, mesas, plains and free-roaming cattle.

Statements From the Set of 'Rust'

Production on the movie has been shut down. A spokesperson for the production said in a statement: "The entire cast and crew has been absolutely devastated by today's tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Halyna's family and loved ones.

"We have halted production on the film for an undetermined period of time and are fully cooperating with the Santa Fe Police Department's investigation. We will be providing counseling services to everyone connected to the film as we work to process this awful event."

Before the incident, people working on the film had shared behind-the-scenes photos. On Thursday morning, Baldwin had shared an image of himself on set in costume, writing: "Back to in person at the office. Blimey...it's exhausting." The post has since been removed from Instagram.

On her own Instagram account, Hutchins had shared multiple pictures of the landscape at Bonanza Creek Ranch. She also shared a photo of the team, with Baldwin in the centre.

Two days before her death, Hutchins posted a short video of her and her team riding horses across the terrain in Santa Fe. Many people, including Dwayne Johnson, have now left comments on this post, offering their condolences to her loved ones.

Newsweek has reached out to Souza and Hutchins' representatives and the film's production company for comment.
