'The Book of Boba Fett' Is Separate From 'The Mandalorian' Season 3, Will Come Out First

The final episode of The Mandalorian Season 2 had plenty of twists, turns, cameos and heart-wrenching scenes that fans of the Disney+ series will be talking about for some time—likely until the release of the next show set within the Star Wars universe.

And it seems that the next chapter of The Mandalorian will be based on the beloved bounty hunter Boba Fett.

Warning: Spoilers are prevalent from here on out.

'The Book of Boba Fett' is set to release December 2021 on Disney+ Star Wars/Disney

In the post-credits scene of The Mandalorian Season 2 finale, fans see Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) arrive at Jabba the Hutt's lair. Of course, with the galactic gangster deceased, his assistant and translator, Bib Fortuna, has taken over. Fett and Shand mow down all of the criminal's men, and even Fortuna himself, before Boba takes a seat on Hutt's throne with Shand standing beside him, as "The Book of Boba Fett coming December 2021" flashes on the screen.

This is an interesting development, as this new series was not announced during the recent Disney Investor Day conference, when it was revealed that a bunch of new Star Wars shows and movies are in the works.

During an appearance on Good Morning America on Monday, The Mandalorian creator and executive producer Jon Favreau explained that it was a very purposeful decision to keep the new Boba Fett series under wraps.

"[The Book of Boba Fett] wasn't part of the big Disney announcement and we wanted to hold this back because we didn't want to spoil the surprise," Favreau said. "So they let me keep this one as a secret."

One question that has popped into the minds of many fans of The Mandalorian (including this writer) is whether The Book of Boba Fett will take the place of The Mandalorian Season 3. Was this post-credits sequence passing the baton to the new series, signaling that there wouldn't be a third season of Mando? Or would the next season actually just focus on Boba Fett? Well, fans don't have to worry or wonder: Favreau gave fans an early Christmas gift when he announced on GMA that The Book of Boba Fett is separate from Mando Season 3, and we'll actually be getting both series.

"[The Book of Boba Fett] is actually separate from The Mandalorian Season 3, but what we didn't say in that announcement is that the next show coming up will be The Book of Boba Fett, and then we go into production right after that, on season 3 of The Mandalorian, right back with the main character that we all have known and loved," Favreau explained. "[The Mandalorian Season 3] will be pretty soon after [The Book of Boba Fett]. We are working on pre-production on [The Mandalorian] while we're in production on Boba Fett now."

Going off of the timeline that Favreau has given, it seems like fans shouldn't expect The Mandalorian Season 3 until at least 2022, but they'll just have to wait for an official announcement confirming a release date.

The Book of Boba Fett, meanwhile, is scheduled to release on Disney+ in December 2021 with Favreau, Dave Filoni and Robert Rodriguez serving as executive producers.
