Nintendo fans were crushed this morning when the unthinkable happened: Bowsette won't be in Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe . A user on the ResetEra forum was looking at the website for the new Mario game and noticed a new addition of flavor text to the Super Crown page. "When Toadette finds one of these she can transform into the super-powerful Peachette (Sorry Luigi- only Toadette can use this item)".
It didn't hurt enough that we weren't going to get the Bowser fan creation, but Nintendo had to put in the horrifying image of Luigi's moustache on the princess of Mushroom Kingdom. Mario's brother does have a long history of wearing Peach's clothes, particularly her dress in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Fan art will exist regardless of Nintendo's wishes and it seemed unlikely that Bowsette would make it into any official game. Still, it would have been nice to have an allusion to the character in Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe . We can still imagine what that game might be, complete with Mario stepping on top of Bowsette's head to get to the axe on the edge of the stage. Or maybe he throws her around by her dress into bombs, like Super Mario 64.
The Super Crown is an item that is not living up to it's true potential. The gender-bending item could create the origins of so many new characters. Want to see what's between Yoshi and Birdo? Slap a crown on either and watch your mind get blown. Waluigette might be a difficult name to spell, but it would be an even more putrid character. Still, the creativity that these characters embody should be celebrated by Nintendo, a company that thought it would be a good idea to sell cardboard and whatever Wii Music wanted to be.
Nintendo making it clear that Bowsette won't be in the next game won't stop people from creating fan art of her. She's become a part of meme culture and one of the most popular video game searches on Pornhub in 2018. She's turned from a side character in a one-off internet comic to a phenomenon. You can't say that about Luigi in a dress.
How do you feel about Nintendo reminding players that Bowsette isn't canon? Tell us in the comments.
