Texas Teenager Allegedly Shoots Sister and Kills Her Boyfriend at 'House Party Gone Bad'

A 14-year-old boy shot his sister and killed her boyfriend during an argument at a "house party gone bad" in Texas, authorities have said.

Briana Hernandez, 18, and her 20-year-old boyfriend were shot by her younger brother at their home in Katy, Texas, late on Saturday night, the Harris County Sheriff's office said.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed to Newsweek on Monday that the 14-year-old was detained at the scene on Saturday night, but is no longer in custody.

Gonzalez said earlier on Twitter that around 10 teenagers and young adults had gathered at the home when a fight broke out between the 14-year-old and his sister's boyfriend.

Update: according to investigators, the injured female (18) and the deceased victim (20) were in a dating relationship. The teen (14) and injured female are said to be siblings. #HouNews https://t.co/MomaWQUdIT

This was basically a house party gone bad. Multiple people were at the residence when an altercation broke out. I am not aware of the connection between the juvenile and other parties. RT @MycahABC13: https://t.co/oRg5fSsO2p

The 14-year-old used a shotgun to open fire at the 20-year-old and also shot his sister, Sheriff Gonzalez said.

Officers arrived at the residence in the 24100 block of Pepperrell Place Street around 11.40 p.m. and found the 20-year-old man, who has not been identified, dead at the scene.

"Investigators learned that approximately ten young adults and teens were gathered at the home when a disturbance began between a juvenile male and the male victim," the sheriff's office said. "The juvenile discharged a shotgun at the victim, striking and killing him. The female victim was also struck by gunfire during this incident."

Hernandez was taken to a nearby trauma center after sustaining a gunshot wound to her upper neck or torso and is expected to survive, according to KHOU 11. The Harris County Sheriff's office said she is in a stable condition.

The couple had been in a relationship for around a year, family members at the scene told the station.

According to KHOU 11, the shooting occurred at the home of the 14-year-old boy and his sister. Their parents were out of the country at the time, the station reported.

"Two victims shot by one suspect, who used a shotgun. One victim was confirmed deceased at the scene and the other is stable at a hospital," Sheriff Gonzalez said on Twitter. "This was basically a house party gone bad. Multiple people were at the residence when the altercation broke out."

The investigation is ongoing and its findings will be presented to the Harris County District Attorney's Office for "appropriate action" after it is concluded, the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff Gonzalez added to Newsweek: "Our investigators will continue the follow-up investigation and then present the facts of the case to a prosecutor that oversees juvenile crimes. A determination will then be made on possible charges."
