Bride Dies at Her Own Wedding, Leading Groom to Marry Her Sister Instead

In an unexpected turn of events, one man in Uttar Pradesh, India, married his bride's sister after his bride collapsed and died at the altar.

The Times of India reports the scene played out on Thursday night as Mangesh Kumar performed his nuptials with his bride-to-be Surbhi. According to the outlet, Surbhi complained of "uneasiness," and then collapsed during the wedding rituals. The family quickly rushed her to a medical facility, but sadly, she was pronounced dead on arrival. She reportedly died of a heart attack.

According to Newshub, the family brought the deceased bride's body back to their home prior to cremation, per local tradition. But the bride's untimely death wouldn't stop the wedding festivities from taking place. Once home, the groom spoke with Surbhi's parents to ask for their other daughter's hand in marriage — the deceased bride's younger sister. Shockingly, the parents agreed. The ceremony took place while Surbhi's dead body lay in another room.

Angry with the sudden turn of events, Surbhi's brother Saurabh said, "It was a bizarre situation as the wedding of my younger sister was being solemnized while the dead body of my other sister was lying in another room."

"We did not know what to do at that time," the bride's brother continued to say according to Newshub. "Someone who had come to the wedding suggested that my younger sister Nisha should marry the groom. Both the families discussed and agreed to it."

The bride's uncle spoke with local outlet TV9 to express the decision to move forward with the wedding of the groom and Surbhi's younger sister wasn't easy.

"It was a tough decision for our family," said Surbhi and Nisha's uncle. "One daughter was lying dead in one room and the wedding of another was going on in another room. We have never experienced such mixed emotions. The grief over the death of Surbhi and the happiness of [Nisha]'s wedding is yet to sink in."

As reported by Newshub, Surbhi's last rites were performed at the wedding.

Mangesh Kumar's wedding isn't the first ceremony from India to end in such a bizarre way. Last month, one bride married a wedding guest after her groom went missing. According to reports, when it became clear the groom hadn't gone missing under mysterious circumstances, the bride's family "deliberated the pool of potential husbands in the groom's wedding party," and selected a new groom. They were married at the venue later that day.
