After 22 months on the campaign trail with George W. Bush, photographer Charles Ommanney says he knows the president pretty well. And vice versa: "He calls me 'Chuckles,' even though I hate it," says Ommanney. Last week NEWSWEEK asked Ommanney to spend a day with Bush and his staff, documenting their work together (the photos begin on page 28). At the end of the shoot, the president grabbed an old picture of himself with Ommanney and inscribed it: "To Charles, a good friend... fine snapper. George W. Bush." "I'm going to frame it," Ommanney says. Washington Legend For nearly 25 years, Meg Greenfield wrote a column for NEWSWEEK with humor and intellect. Greenfield, the editorial-page editor of The Washington Post, was a capital icon; she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1978. Before she died in 1999, Greenfield began working on a memoir in secret. "Washington" was edited by historian Michael Beschloss. Her great friend Katharine Graham contributed the foreword. Our excerpt begins on page 69. Hollywood's Hot Flicks Most people chill during the summer. But in Los Angeles, the season's positively charged. Why? "Simple, school's out," says David Ansen, whose story on "Shrek" opens our summer-movie preview (page 62). The package includes John Horn on sequels and Devin Gordon's take on the big-budget behemoths. Online, check out the trailers.
