California Fire Map, Update as Bobcat Blaze Exceeds 'Critical Thresholds for Large Fire Growth'

Firefighters continue to battle 27 major wildfires in California, including the Bobcat Fire in Los Angeles County, which has been burning since September 6 with "a rapid rate of spread," according to the latest report Tuesday from the Incident Information System of the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG).

The Bobcat Fire "remains very active, with active wind-driven spread, upslope and downslope runs, torching and spotting, passive and active crowning observed," and "all critical thresholds for large fire growth are being exceeded," the report confirmed.

Around 8,000 wildfires in California have burned more than 3.6 million acres of the state this year to date. Over 6,500 structures have been destroyed and 26 people have died since August 15 when the state began seeing increased fire activity, according to the latest report Tuesday from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

"California will continue with mostly seasonal temperatures today into Wednesday. The milder weather that much of California is currently experiencing will be coming to an end this weekend," with a sharp increase in temperatures to come as high pressure builds over the region, Cal Fire noted.

"Today [Tuesday] marks the first day of fall and this is the time period California historically experiences some of the largest and most devastating wildfires," Cal Fire warned.

Here are the latest updates on some of the largest fires across the state.

Bobcat Fire

• Location: Los Angeles County.
• Acres: 112,053.
• Containment: 17 percent.

The northern portion of the fire continued to spread among the foothill communities of Juniper Hills, Valyermo and towards Big Pine.

"Wind-driven fire spread downslope with spotting and rapid growth threatening structures. Community of Littlerock and Wrightwood will be impacted soon," the NWCG report warned.

"Fire activity on the north side of the Wilson Observatory is threatening all of the values on that peak, Red Box Fire Station, Camp-Hi High School and Barley Flat on the northside of Highway 2," the report added.

At least 29 structures have been destroyed but the tally could reach 85, officials confirmed Tuesday, according to the The Los Angeles Times.

August Complex Fire

• Location: Mendocino, Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity counties.
• Acres: 851,061.
• Containment: 38 percent.
• Structures threatened: 13,926.

The August Complex Fire is spread across the North, South and West zones.

The West Zone was reported to be at 102,769 acres, with 40 percent contained on Tuesday, according to Cal Fire's latest report.

Active fire behavior was reported in the North Zone, with the fire expected to remain active along the Wrights Valley and Shell Mountain areas of the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness, Cal Fire noted.

In the South Zone, "lower relative humidity and clear skies will increase fire behavior as the day progresses. Erratic winds may produce short runs when aligned with fuels and terrain," according to the latest NWCG report Tuesday.

Creek Fire

• Location: Fresno and Madera counties.
• Acres: 286,519.
• Containment: 32 percent.
• Structures threatened: 6,723.

Active fire behavior continued in the North Zone of the Creek Fire. "The most activity will be Central Camp, Timber Creek, Whisky Falls, and towards Timber Butte and north of Strawberry Mine. Fire activity along the eastern edge of the fire, from Bog Cabin to Pine Flat will be limited by rocky terrain and lighter fuels," Cal Fire noted Tuesday.

Over in the South Zone, the blaze continued to "make active runs with torching," burning at the north end along the South Fork of the San Joaquin River and progressing south. The eastern portion continues to burn towards the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness, according to the NWCG report Tuesday.

The fire in the north end of the South Zone will continue to the area south of Mount Tom as well as towards Florence Lake and the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness, the NWCG report warned.

SQF Complex Fire

• Location: Tulare County.
• Acres: 141,600.
• Containment: 33 percent.
• Structures threatened: 3,188.

The SQF Complex Fire includes the Castle and Shotgun fires, both of which are burning in the Sequoia National Forest. The Castle Fire is also burning in the Inyo National Forest and the Golden Trout Wilderness Area.

In the eastern part of the Castle Fire, fire activity remained in the area stretching from Camp Nelson to the Kern River, according to the latest report Tuesday by the NWCG.

Active fire behavior is expected on all active fire edges of the eastern portion of the Castle Fire. "This will include surface fire activity with moderate rates of spread, single tree and group tree torching with spotting up to 1/2 mile," the report said.

The heat from the fire continues to impact the communities of Cedar Slope, Alpine Village, Jordan Peak, and Sequoia Crest, and threatens structures including the Peppermint Work Center, Camp Nelson, Pierpoint, Ponderosa, Rogers Camp, Mountain Aire and the Tule Indian Reservation, the report confirmed.

Minimal fire growth is expected for the Shotgun Fire, the NWCG confirmed.

Slater/Devil Fires

• Location: Siskiyou County.
• Acres: 150,230 (Slater); 7,458 (Devil).
• Containment: 22 percent (Slater); 18 percent (Devil).
• Fatalities: 2.

The Slate and Devil fires span both California (107,129 acres burned) and a portion of Oregon (43,101acres burned).

The western and northwestern portions of the blaze experienced "some isolated torching, backing and flanking," while progression to the southwest and western portions was slowed, the NWCG noted Tuesday.

"Critical fire weather expected Wednesday," with the rain spreading across the fire area from the west late Wednesday night and continuing through Thursday morning, the NWCG noted.

Dolan Fire

• Location: Monterey County.
• Acres: 128,417.
• Containment: 44 percent.

The potential for active fire behavior remains for the Dolan Fire, with low relative humidity and poor recoveries reported above the marine layer. But "successful suppression actions have quelled overall fire movement. The majority of activity is occurring in interior pockets of unburned fuel," according to the NWCG report Wednesday.

Over the next around 72 hours, active fire behavior is expected to be limited to unburned interior pockets of fuel, while high temperatures and low humidity returning at the weekend will test the fire. "It is anticipated that quiet areas of the fire will begin to show activity, specifically in the bottoms of drainages and other sheltered areas," the report noted.

Red Salmon Complex Fire

• Location: Humboldt, Siskiyou and Trinity counties.
• Acres: 104,667.
• Containment: 29 percent.

The fire remained active in Divisions Q, R and K, while other divisions continued to cool, according to the latest report Tuesday from the NWCG. The evacuation order for the community Forks of Salmon has been reduced to an evacuation warning. While some National Forests have reopened, the Six Rivers and Klamath National Forests remain entirely closed, the report noted.

Total acreage of forests burned include:

• Six Rivers National Forest: 45,972 acres
• Shasta Trinity National Forest: 35,785 acres
• Klamath National Forest: 20,407 acres
• Hoopa Valley Reservation: 2,503 acres
