California Man Bites Off Part of Father's Ear at Mormon Church Party, Father Tries to Glue Ear Back Together

A California man has been charged after he bit off part of his father's ear during a holiday party at a Mormon church—and his father then tried to glue it back on, authorities said.

Josue Moises Montuy, 28, was taken into custody after the incident in Crows Landing, south of Modesto, California, on Sunday evening, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies were called to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after a fight broke out at around 6 p.m. during a holiday party, Stanislaus County Sheriff's Sergeant Josh Clayton told The Modesto Bee.

Clayton said Montuy's father, who he did not name, had tried to break up a fight between his son and a missionary. But Montuy then allegedly started punching his father instead and bit off a one-inch piece of his earlobe.

Deputies found Montuy at the church and arrested him, but his father had gotten into his car to buy super glue. CBS 13 reported the father drove for 20 minutes before stopping at a Dollar Tree store more than 15 miles from the church to buy super glue.

Deputies found the father before he could try to glue his ear back together and called an ambulance for him, Clayton told The Modesto Bee.

Customers at the Dollar Tree were stunned at the father's response, with one describing it as the kind of hack people would use in the past.

"I feel like that would be a wartime kind of fix. That's not something you would necessarily do in a modern situation when you have medicine all around you," Crystal Edwards told CBS 13.

Pierre Rector also expressed his shock, but told the station: "At least he's saving money by going to Dollar General." Crystal Peredea added: "That's extreme. That's a man for you, duct tape and super glue."

Montuy, of San Jose, California, has been charged with mayhem and is being held on $100,000 bail, according to online records from the sheriff's department.

The charge of mayhem, a felony in California law, is defined as unlawfully or maliciously disfiguring or disabling a person's body. If convicted, Montuy faces up to eight years in a state prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department and Dollar General have been contacted for comment.
