California's Memorial Day Hours for Stores, Restaurants, Banks and Gyms

Today is Memorial Day—a federal holiday to honor and remember those who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Non-essential government services in California will be closed and federal employees will have a paid day off, but what will be open across the state on Memorial Day?

Stores in California

Stores will be open on Memorial Day, and many will be hosting sales. Home Depot, Lowe's and Best Buy will be open today, as will Kohl's, Old Navy, Sears, Macy's and TJ Maxx.

Target and Walmart will be open. Other grocery stores opening on Memorial Day include Kmart, Ralphs and Albertsons. Sam's Club will open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. local time, and Aldi will be open but operating with limited hours.

Safeway, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods will be open, but check with your local store for exact hours. Additionally, 7-Eleven is open on most holidays, but may operate with limited hours.

Pharmacies and convenience stores will be open, including CVS Pharmacy, Duane Reade, Rite Aid and Walgreens. Dollar General and Family Dollar will also be open.

Restaurants in California

Restaurants opening on Memorial Day include Applebee's, Arby's, Chili's Grill & Bar, Panera Bread and Red Lobster. Pizza places will be open, including Domino's Pizza and Pizza Hut.

Fast-food restaurants will be operating today, including Burger King, Chick-fil-A, KFC, McDonald's, Jack in the Box, Wendy's, Sonic Drive-in, Subway and Taco Bell. Their hours may vary by location.

Coffee shops will be open, such as Dunkin' and Starbucks.

Gyms in California

Gym chains will generally be open on Memorial Day, though hours will vary by location. The gyms in California that will probably be open include Planet Fitness, Equinox, 24 Hour Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Crunch Fitness and Snap Fitness.

Banks in California

Banks in California will be closed on Memorial Day, as they follow the holiday schedule of the Federal Reserve. Bank of America, Chase Bank, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Bank of the West, BMO Harris Bank, SunTrust, HSBC USA and Comerica Bank will all be shut.

Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day when it originated following the Civil War. It became a federal holiday in 1971 and is observed every year on the last Monday of May.
