Police launched a homicide investigation after the woman's body was discovered by someone walking along the Hosp Grove Trail East in Carlsbad at around 11.20 a.m. on Monday.

In a news release, the police department said the woman's identity had been determined, but that information will not be released at this time.

But police appealed for anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious on the trail, located near the 2600 block of Monroe Street, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Monday to come forward.

They said a tip described a man who may have been in the vicinity at the time, but said it was not known if he was connected to the woman's death.

He is described as white or Hispanic, between 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 3 inches tall, with a husky build, tan complexion and dark hair. The man was wearing a black shirt, black shorts and possibly a black hat and was walking slowly with a slight shuffle or limp, police said.

"We understand and share the community's concern over this tragic case," Lt. Jason Jackowski, who is leading the investigation, said in a statement.

"We have devoted all available resources and are working around the clock to ensure justice for the victim and her family."

Jackowski added: "We know the community wants answers, and we will release as much information as we can as soon as we can. Our main goal is to ensure the community's safety and to complete a thorough, careful investigation."

Jackowski said that extra police patrols have been assigned to the area. The police department also advised people walking or jogging along the trail to take precautions.

They said people should notify family or friends of their plans, walk with a companion, stay alert and avoid exercising after dark. They also advised people to vary their route and schedule and be alert to anyone who asks for directions and continues to engage in conversation.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Carlsbad Police Department at 760-931-2165.
