The free multiplayer weekend starts August 7 at 1 p.m. EDT and runs through August 12 at 1 p.m. EDT. At that time, a playlist update will be added to Modern Warfare and Warzone alike to allow free and paid soldiers to join lobbies together.

How to download the free multiplayer demo

Just like all other free multiplayer weekends in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, access will be offered through the free Call of Duty: Warzone download on PS4, Xbox One and PC. In other words, if you're already playing Warzone, all you've got to do is wait for the above-listed start time to arrive to begin playing. If you've never dipped your toes into Warzone before, these additional steps may help.

  • PS4: Search for Call of Duty: Warzone in the PlayStation Store or use this link.
  • Xbox: Search for Call of Duty: Warzone in the Microsoft Store or use this link
  • PC: Search for Call of Duty: Warzone on the Battle.net application or use this link.

With everything downloaded, all you've got to do is wait for the clock to strike 1 p.m. EDT on August 7. When that happens, you should see a new queue listed amongst the traditional Battle Royale and Plunder playlists. Names like "Stocked Up, Locked Down 24/7" and "Multiplayer Moshpit" have been used in the past. Either way, you'll know it when you see it. If you purchase or unlock anything during the free weekend, that can also be used in the full version of Modern Warfare if you buy it later on.

Which maps and modes are offered during the free weekend

The free weekend starting August 7 is perhaps the biggest complimentary multiplayer offering we've seen yet. It features maps including Suldal Harbor, Petrov Oil Rig, Shoot House, Shipment and Cheshire Park. The first two names on that list were just introduced in the Season 5 update on Wednesday.

Here are the modes on offer for the free weekend alongside a brief description of how each one works.

  • Team Deathmatch: A team-based race to rack up 75 kills.
  • Kill Confirmed: Kills only count when an opponent's dog tags are picked up from their body. The first to collect 65 dog tags wins.
  • Domination: Get 200 points by holding objectives.
  • Hardpoint: Get 250 points by holding a single, rotating objective.

IIt's also worth noting that Double XP will be active as well, which means your characters should be leveled up quite nicely if you opt to pay for the full version down the line or wait for next free weekend.
