'Captain Marvel': The Cull Obsidian 'Infinity War' Easter Egg Explained
The Blu-ray release for Infinity War is an exciting time. Fast forwarding, skipping and pausing is a comic book fan's version of searching for gold, and a reddit user has found some yet again. So if you thought you caught every easter egg in Avengers: Infinity War, you were wrong. A photo on imgur showed Cull Obsidian wearing a Captain Marvel sash three months ago, but HD goes a long way. Now, there are a bunch of theories about why Obsidian (of Thanos' Black Order) has the sash and what it means for the solo Captain Marvel film come March.
The sash features the gold, red and blue color scheme, with gold lines textured and angled just like Captain Marvel's costume. It's in the scene when Cull Obsidian and Ebony Maw arrive in New York to take down Tony Stark, Wong and Doctor Strange to acquire the Time Stone outside the Sanctum Sanctorum.

The meaning behind the sash doesn't really tell us anything about Infinity War, but it does tease the forthcoming conflicts explored first in Captain Marvel and then Avengers 4. The intuitive assumption is that Cull Obsidian at least fought Captain Marvel at some point before Infinity War, but the more interesting aspect of this easter egg comes with the origins of Captain Marvel's costume in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It's unclear at this point if her costume design signifies her alliance with the Kree military, or perhaps with a larger intergalactic space organization, such as SHIELD (or SWORD)? If so, this sash could be from anyone affiliated. The post-credits of Avengers: Infinity War showed two SHIELD agents, Nick Fury and Maria Hill, call on Captain Marvel as they disintegrate into dust. She obviously has some sort of relationship with SHIELD. And if its a military-inspired costume, it could be anyone from the Kree military who fought Obsidian and lost. But if the costume is hers and only hers, this easter egg could be bad news.

In the comic books, Captain Marvel's original costume is based on one worn by Mar-Vell, the hero who inspired Carol Danvers (who will be played by Jude Law in the film). The first iterations of Mar-Vell's costume were influenced by Kree military garb and he eventually wore something more distinctive. He never had a sash, however, whereas Captain Marvel is known for hers. Dave Cockrum gave Captain Marvel (Ms. Marvel at the time) her sash in Ms. Marvel #20 in 1978. Captain Marvel is best known now for her costume in Kelly Sue DeConnick's run (designed by Jamie McKelvie with illustration from Dexter Soy) which, again, has a sash. Unlike Captain Marvel, we have no idea what Mar-Vell's costume looks like in the film let alone if it has a sash.

Perhaps Obsidian killed Mar-vell, and that's why the sash looks so similar to Captain Marvel's costume. Perhaps not, but either way, there is certainly a story behind this sash. Do you have any theories? Let us know in the comments below. Captain Marvel arrives in theaters March 8, 2019.
