Cardi B has found an unlikely ally in the form of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. On Wednesday, Sanders appeared to endorse the Bronx rapper on Twitter and shared in her sentiments on former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
In a recent interview with GQ, released on April 9, Cardi gushed over her "love of government" and obsession with presidents while sharing her appreciation for FDR. She called him the "real Make America Great Again President" because of his great contributions toward pulling the U.S. out of the Great Depression in the late 1930s. "If it wasn't for him, old people wouldn't even get Social Security," Cardi said.
Social Security Works tweeted a photo of Cardi along with her quote, which was later retweeted by Sanders, who said that "Cardi B is right" about FDR and Social Security. "If we really are going to make America great again we need to strengthen social security so that seniors are able to retire with the dignity they deserve," Sanders, a previous presidential candidate and a rumored 2020 hopeful, wrote on Twitter.
For years, there have been concerns that Social Security trust funds could run out, leaving millions of seniors without access to retirement and disability benefits. In 2016, the Social Security Administration's (SSA) suggested full funding would last until 2034 but said that the retirement fund alone may only be "adequate into 2035." According to SSA, about nine out of 10 seniors ages 65 and up in America currently live off Social Security benefits, 63 million of which are expected to receive Social Security in 2018.
Let Cardi tell it, Social Security and America's economy as we know it would be obsolete if it wasn't for the 32nd president and the New Deal, otherwise known as the economic policy Roosevelt instated that essentially ended the Great Depression in 1939. "He helped us get over the Depression all while he was in a wheelchair. Like, this man was suffering from polio at the time of his presidency, and yet all he was worried about was trying to make America great," she said.
Cardi B is right. If we are really going to make America great we need to strengthen Social Security so that seniors are able to retire with the dignity they deserve. https://t.co/B8cOkoOdLc
