Cardi B and Offset File for Divorce—a Relationship Time Line

Rappers Cardi B and Offset filed for divorce in Atlanta on Tuesday.

The couple, whose on-again, off-again relationship made headlines a number of times throughout their marriage, opened a divorce petition in Fulton County, according to court documents. They are reportedly expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on November 4.

Tuesday's news comes one week shy of Cardi B (née Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar) and Offset's (né Kiari Kendrell Cephus) three-year anniversary. The musicians wed during a private ceremony in Atlanta in September 2017 but did not confirm their marriage publicly until June of the following year. They share one child, 2-year-old Kulture Kiari Cephus.

Family court documents reportedly obtained by TMZ, which also surfaced on social media Tuesday afternoon, suggested Cardi B filed the paperwork. Neither rapper has commented on the divorce reports.

Cardi B and Offset met in 2016 at a music industry event, jumpstarting a string of professional collaborations released over the months and years that followed. They first appeared publicly together at Super Bowl LI in Houston, Texas, an outing Offset eventually confirmed was their first date during a subsequent Rolling Stone interview.

The Migos star's on-stage proposal one month later, during a concert in Philadelphia, drew national buzz and praise from Cardi, who wrote about her appreciation for the "special moment" on Twitter in June 2018, after the world learned they'd been married all along. Cardi and Offset were married on September 20, 2017.

Earlier, at the beginning of 2018, rumors that Offset was unfaithful began to circulate. Cardi addressed them in comments to Cosmopolitan that February. "I want to work s*** out with my man, and I don't got to explain why," she told the magazine. In April 2018, Cardi revealed the couple was expecting during a Saturday Night Live appearance, where she performed a song off her debut album that some speculate references Offset's alleged infidelity.

TMZ confirmed Cardi and Offset's secret wedding that summer, after acquiring the pair's marriage certificate. Their daughter, Kulture, was born in July. In December, Cardi announced she and Offset had split up in a video posted to Instagram, which cited additional infidelity rumors that spread throughout the latter half of the year.

Offset proceeded to apologize for his behavior, and infamously interrupted Cardi's Rolling Loud set with a plea to take him back about a week after she discussed the breakup online. They reportedly mended the relationship in January 2019, and sealed the reconciliation with a memorable public display of affection on the Grammys carpet in February.

The couple spent the remainder of 2019 and most of 2020 winning awards, performing music together and posting family photos on social media. In August, Cardi noted that the relationship "has a lot of drama and everything...but there's a lot of love and there's a lot of passion, there's a lot of trust, there's a big friendship" during an interview with ELLE magazine.
