Nearly half a decade ago, the fourth-generation Chevrolet Silverado debuted to a collective gasp, both for its brawny exterior and downmarket interior. It's taken a few years but Chevy has gone a long way in righting the ship with the introduction the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado.

The new version of the model gives it the latest tech in the General Motors lineup, adds a new ZR2 off-roading-ready grade to choose from, and revises the truck's fascia. Chevy has also enhanced the Silverado's engine lineup.

Every Silverado gets a new face as part of the changes. The various fascias are designed to emphasize the truck's width and stance. Animated walk-up and walk-away functions have been added to the truck's daytime running lights. Select trim levels of the truck get animated sweeping turn signals.

Chevrolet will offer the truck in three new paint colors. Dark Ash, Sand Dune and Glacier Blue Metallic join a bevy of other hues.

The company's engineers have enhanced the Silverado's turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine. It has more torque than any base engine in its class and is capable of towing 9,500 pounds when equipped with two-wheel drive. Changes to the structure of the engine allow it to be quieter and allow more torque production in the low to mid rpm range of the torque curve. The truck's transmission has been tuned to be more refined.

Engineers have also worked on the combination of the 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel power plant, which allow it to now be combined with the Max Tow Package upping its maximum tow rating to 13,300 pounds when equipped with two-wheel drive, a 4,000-pound improvement.

Designers have given the Silverado a new instrument panel and center console space that features added functionality. An electronic shifter is available on most trim levels.

At the center of the dashboard of 2022 Silverado LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, ZR2, LTZ and High Country trim levels is a new 13.4-inch infotainment touch screen. Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play are standard. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included.

Chevrolet is offering Super Cruise hands-free advanced driver assist technology on Silverado High Country models for 2022. It's capable of being used while towing.

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado arrives at dealerships nationwide in the spring of 2022. Silverado High Country models with Super Cruise will have late availability.

The new Silverado ZR2 is the first of its kind. Honed in the desert, the Silverado ZR2 is off-road-ready from the get-go merging a premium interior with speciality factory equipment.

A black hood, unique grille with integrated lighting, a "flow-tie" emblem, ZR2 badges, 18-inch wheels, and a Jet Black/Graystone leather-trimmed interior help set the model apart from the rest of the Silverados in the company's lineup.

Under its hood is a 6.2-liter V8 that delivers 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Engineers have added Multimatic 40mm DSSV spool-valve dampers to the truck, the first time such equipment has made its way onto the Silverado. It also gets uniquely tuned springs designed to increase travel, front and rear electric lockers, unique chassis and suspension tuning, a skid plate package, 33-inch off-road MT tires, and a high-approach steel front bumper that has removable end caps.

Switch the model into Terrain Mode and driers are able to enjoy one-pedal rock crawling.

The truck's approach angle has been improved to 31.8 inches. To help it steer clear of damage, Chevy has moved the truck's exhaust to before the rear bumper.

The ZR2 has a max payload of 1,440 pounds and a trailer weight rating of 8,900 pounds.

Pricing for the Silverado ZR2 has not yet been announced but is expected to rival that of the Ford Raptor and Ram 1500 TRX, which start at around $65,000 and $70,000, respectively.
