Chicken Recall 2019: More Than 2 Million Pounds of Simmons Foods Products May Contain Unsafe Levels of Metal

More than 2 million pounds of poultry distributed by Simmons Prepared Foods is being recalled over concerns that it may contain "extraneous" material—including metal.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a class I recall notice on November 6, 2019 after the issue was brought to Simmons' attention during further processing. The recall affects 2,071,397 pounds of chicken products.

These products were produced between October 21, 2019 and November 4, 2019, and display the establishment numbers "P-1949," "P- 486" or "P-5837" inside the USDA mark of inspection on the packaging. According to the notice, they had been shipped to Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.

There have not yet been any reports of adverse side effects caused by Simmons poultry but consumers and companies that may have purchased the products affected are advised to dispose of them immediately.

While the recall notice does not specify which metals may be involved in the contamination, the metals most associated with adverse health effects include lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic.

These are naturally occurring compounds that are not in themselves harmful but, as the European Food Safety Authority points out, can lead to harmful effects—including cancer—if allowed to accumulate over time.
