Convicted Child Molester Dies After Being Beaten in Jail Cell

A convicted child molester who was serving a life sentence has died after allegedly being attacked by his cellmate in a Florida jail. Paul Dixon, 43, has been arrested on suspicion of murdering David Oseas Ramirez following an incident at around 11 a.m. on July 30 at Duval County Jail.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Dixon killed his cellmate at the pre-trial detention facility after a verbal altercation became physical. A third cellmate who witnessed the attack has so far refused to speak to detectives.

The attack occurred in the east wing of the fifth floor of the facility, where inmates who are awaiting transfers to state prison or court proceedings are housed.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office did not identify the victim in their statement. However, as reported by First Coast News, jail records show that Ramirez is no longer housed at the jail, with the reason for his release listed as "deceased."

Ramirez was sentenced to life in prison in 2013 after he was convicted of the lewd or lascivious molestation of an 11-year-old girl. According to reports at the time, a jury took just 15 minutes to find him guilty of the charge.

"When men go to jail accused, convicted of hurting a child, there is no peace in jail," said News4Jax crime and safety analyst Ken Jefferson. "They have to constantly watch over their back. They have to hope they can befriend someone to look out for them. To protect them."

Dixon had arrived at Duval County jail from another facility while awaiting court proceedings for a new sentencing hearing as required by recently passed state laws, reports Dixon is serving a life sentence after he was convicted of murdering someone in 1993 when he was 17-years-old.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said examples of cellmates killing each other are rare at the prison.

"We were talking about the last time there was ever an incident like this in Jacksonville, and none of us can recall anything in recent memory. I mean, I've been here almost 23 years. I can't recall one," JSO Assistant Chief Brian Kee told Action News Jax.

Police said surveillance footage from inside the prison has been handed over to investigators as evidence. "Every aspect of this incident will be evaluated and the investigation is ongoing," the department added in a statement.
