Alexi Laiho, Children of Bodom Singer, Dead at 41 Following 'Long-Term Health Issues'

Alexi Laiho, the lead guitarist and lead vocalist of the Finnish death metal band Children of Bodom has died at the age of 41 at his home in Helsinki, Finland.

His death was confirmed by a statement from Bodom After Midnight, the death metal group formed in 2020 by Laiho and his former bandmate Daniel Freyberg after Children of Bodom disbanded in 2019.

The statement, posted on Twitter by the band's music label Napalm Records, read: "It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we have to announce the passing of Alexi Laiho. We are absolutely devastated and heartbroken for the sudden loss of our dear friend and band member. Daniel, Mitja [Toivonen] & Waltteri [Väyrynen]."

Children of Bodom also released a statement: "One of the most renowned guitarists in the world, Alexi Laiho, has passed away. The musician, most notably known as the front man of Children of Bodom, died in his home in Helsinki, Finland, last week. Laiho had suffered from long-term health issues during his last years.

"More than 25 years of friendship. We lost a brother. The world lost a phenomenal song writer and one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Memories and Alexi's music will live forever.

"Our thoughts are with Alexi's family during this difficult time. - Henkka [T. Blacksmith], Janne [Wirman] and Jaska [Raatikainen]."

Laiho's sister said: "We are all absolutely shocked and devastated. We ask for privacy and understanding during these hard times. My little brother's funeral will take place privately," in a statement posted by Bodom After Midnight's management on Laiho's official Facebook page.

The late musician's wife, Kelli Wright-Laiho, said in the statement: "Alexi was the most loving and magnificent husband and father. Our hearts are eternally broken."
Bodom After Midnight added: "Our deepest condolences go to his family. No further announcements nor interviews will be given at this time. We kindly ask to respect our need to process and go through this terrible situation in privacy. Thank you for your understanding and support," in a post on the band's official Facebook page.

The statement by Bodom After Midnight's management noted: "The talented guitarist and musician relished his roles as stepdad in his patchwork family, and as uncle and godfather. Especially during the last years, the important family ties brought a welcomed balance to his life and the active touring. Laiho was particularly close with his big sister, parents and his sister's daughter."

Laiho was a founding member of Children of Bodom, which launched in 1993. The band was "one of the most internationally acclaimed metal acts in Finland up until their very last farewell concert in December of 2019," according to the latest statement on his official Facebook page.

He formed Bodom After Midnight last year and the group recorded three songs. A music video was shot for one of the three songs, "which will be released later on posthumously," the statement noted.

The late guitarist received a Metal Hammer Golden Gods award and several other international prizes.
