Lidl US is voluntarily recalling all lots of the Favorina brand Chocolate Ladybugs due to an "undeclared hazelnut allergen," an alert posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says on Thursday.

Newsweek reached out to the company via email for comment.

Numerous recalls have been initiated in the past year because of potentially damaged products, foodborne illness, undeclared food allergens or the potential for bacteria.

Millions of Americans experience food sensitivities or food allergies every year. According to the FDA, the nine "major" food allergens in the United States are eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts and peanuts.

According to the recall, the product impacted is the Favorina Chocolate Ladybugs—German-Style Nougat, sold in 3.52-ounce boxes with a UPC number of 20304492.

The recalled chocolate was distributed to all Lidl US stores in Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, District of Columbia, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia, the alert says. The product was distributed to the stores from January 28, 2026, to March 11, 2026.

Below is a map showing the states impacted by the recall:

"The health and safety of our customers is our top priority. Lidl US regrets any inconvenience related to this voluntary recall. Our Quality Assurance Department is constantly working to ensure that all products on our shelves meet the high-quality standards that we would expect when feeding our own families. We are grateful for all our Lidl US customers who choose to shop with us every day," the alert said in part.

There have been no reported illnesses related to the recall as of Thursday, according to the alert, and customers who have purchased the recalled chocolate are urged not to consume it and return the product "to their nearest Lidl store for a full refund."

Those with additional questions can contact the Lidl US Customer Care Hotline via phone at 844-747-5435 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET weekdays and Saturdays.

In an email to Newsweek last year, the FDA said: "Most recalls in the U.S. are carried out voluntarily by the product manufacturer and when a company issues a public warning, typically via news release, to inform the public of a voluntary product recall, the FDA shares that release on our website as a public service.

"The FDA's role during a voluntary, firm-initiated, recall is to review the recall strategy, evaluate the health hazard presented by the product, monitor the recall, and as appropriate alert the public and other companies in the supply chain about the recall.

"The FDA provides public access to information on recalls by posting a listing of recalls according to their classification in the FDA Enforcement Report, including the specific action taken by the recalling company. The FDA Enforcement Report is designed to provide a public listing of products in the marketplace that are being recalled."

Additional information on recalls can be found via the FDA's Recalls, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts.
