What Chris Cuomo Has Said About Joining NewsNation After CNN Firing

Chris Cuomo is joining NewsNation to host a primetime show, less than a year after he was fired by CNN.

CNN dismissed the host in December 2021, saying he "broke our rules" by helping his brother, Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York, respond to allegations of sexual harassment.

NewsNation, previously known as WGN America, is a cable news network founded in 1978. It is owned by Nexstar Media Group.

Chris Cuomo filed a lawsuit against CNN in March 2022, seeking $125 million in compensation for what he claims was an "unlawful termination." Newsweek has contacted CNN for comment.

Cuomo's NewsNation show will be launched in the fall.

What Has Chris Cuomo Said About Joining NewsNation?

Cuomo revealed that he was joining NewsNation during an interview on the network on Tuesday, July 26.

He told host Dan Abrams: "I'm going to come to NewsNation and I want to build something special here. I had decided that I can't go back to what people see as 'the big game'. I don't think I can make a difference there.

"I think we need insurgent media. I think we need outlets that aren't fringe and just trying to fill their pockets."

In a statement, he added: "NewsNation believes in the work I am doing with [my podcast] the Chris Cuomo Project and I look forward to … covering news wherever it happens and having conversations that cater to common concerns and solutions rather than political parties or the political circus."

Sean Compton, president of networks at Nexstar, said in a statement: "Chris joins our growing team of seasoned, award-winning journalists and will further our efforts to continue to ensure fairness and transparency in our news reporting and talk shows."

Why Was Chris Cuomo Fired From CNN?

Chris Cuomo was suspended by CNN in late November last year, amid revelations about his efforts to help his brother, Andrew Cuomo.

On December 4, the network fired him.

A CNN spokesperson said in a statement at the time: "The New York Attorney General's office released transcripts and exhibits Monday that shed new light on Chris Cuomo's involvement in his brother's defense. The documents, which we were not privy to before their public release, raise serious questions. When Chris admitted to us that he had offered advice to his brother's staff, he broke our rules and we acknowledged that publicly."

Andrew Cuomo, who resigned as governor in August 2021, has denied the sexual harassment allegations against him.
