'Clash of Clans' December Update Sneak Peeks Show Ice Golem & Builder Balance

Clash of Clans ' December update is almost here, which means sneak peeks are rolling in. The latest ones detail a new Ice Golem troop as well as a few balance changes coming to the Builder Base. We'll outline all the key details below.

Ice Golem

Here's what we know about the Ice Golem so far.

  • It's available at Town Hall 11 (Level 8 Dark Barracks) with level 4 available at Town Hall 12.
  • DPS: 24. 28, 32, 36
  • Freeze time when destroyed: 4.5 seconds, 4.75 seconds, 5.5 seconds, 6.25 seconds
  • HP: 2,600 to 2,800 to 3,000 to 3,200
  • Training Cost: 220 DE, 240 DE, 260 DE, 280 DE
  • Training Time Six minutes
  • Favorite Target: Defenses
  • Damage Type: Single Target
  • Targets: Ground
  • Housing Space: 15
  • Movement Speed: 12

Compared to the regular Golem, the Ice Golem allows you to place two troops for greater output and the same amount of housing space. They key thing to remember about Ice Golems, though, is that they're much more functional in pairs. Once one of them is knocked out, you're essentially dealing with a heavily nerfed version of the standard Golem. All that extra freeze time to traps may be worth the risk, however, because that Freeze ability can literally hold anything in place.

In fact, the Ice Golem's stacked Freeze time is so good that it may be a little overpowered. We'll have to wait and see how that meta shifts once the update goes live.

Builder Base Balance Changes

In a sneak peek revealed Friday afternoon, Supercell also discussed a small number of balance changes coming to the Builder Base.

  • Cannon Cart: DPS reduced by 15 percent, third Cannon Cart unlocked at level 10. This is designed to make the higher-level cart less OP while also making the cart available to a greater number of low-level players.
  • Baby Dragon: HP increased by 7.5 percent. Done to make the Baby Dragon more popular.
  • Super P.E.K.K.A.: HP reduced by 5 percent to make her less OP at high levels.
  • Star Laboratory: Upgrade times of Builder Base troops reduced to make them more popular.
  • Gem Mine: Can be upgraded to level 3 at Builder Hall level 3. This should increase gem output at that level.

While these balance changes aren't exactly huge, they are an interesting way to potentially shake up a stale Builder Base meta. Cannon Carts and Super P.E.K.K.A.'s have become abusive, but, now that they're slightly less powerful, other troops may step up to fill the void. Something like the Baby Dragon could do that, but a slight buff to health doesn't really seem like it's enough to make fans reconsider their attack plans.

This last sneak peek in particular is probably the most significant one yet. While many Clash of Clans fans have been critical of additions like the Bat Spell and new Magic Items, the Ice Golem is purposefully designed to spice up high-level play. This December Update obviously isn't the biggest Clash of Clans overhaul we've seen to date, but there's just enough here to freshen its strategic base across all modes. We'll have more to say when the final patch notes go live.

Clash of Clans is available now on Android and iOS. A release date for the December update has not been formally announced, but we expect it'll be live sometime next week.
