CNN's Chris Cuomo Blasts Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz On Gun Violence, 'You Guys Have Never Done A Damn Thing'

Viewers who tuned in to CNN's Cuomo Prime Time were treated to an explosive segment between the show's host, Chris Cuomo and Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz as the two went head to head over gun violence, immigration and how both are being utilized in the current political climate.

The segment began with Cuomo airing a clip from an interview with Manuel Oliver, the father of Joaquin Oliver, a student killed in 2018 during a school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Manuel Oliver and Gaetz both made headlines after an exchange during Wednesday's congressional hearing on gun violence, after Oliver's repeated interruptions to protest Gaetz's comments and the congressman's request that Oliver and another Parkland father be forced to leave the room.

After expressing his regret that Oliver's son was killed, Gaetz told Cuomo that he spoke up about Oliver's outburst due to the reaction of a 24-year-old rape survivor who was sitting near him and "intimidated" by Oliver's yelling.

"I looked at her and I could tell that she was scared," Gaetz said. "I know people react to trauma differently, but I was not trying to get Mr. Oliver thrown out or removed like your network has suggested." Gaetz went on to say that Oliver didn't mean to intimidate her, but that the survivor had complained to some legislators seated on the right side of the room about the outbursts.

"You don't just get to show up in Washington and because a terrible thing has happened to you that you get to jump up and scream and yell," Gaetz said.

As for his part in the hearing, Gaetz added that his goal was to highlight how America "would be in a better position today if we did not have illegal immigrants using guns to kill people."

Later, Cuomo told Gaetz that inserting a border wall into a hearing on gun violence "looked like grandstanding because it has nothing to do with the solution."

Gaetz then gave stats cited from the Bureau of Crime Statistics that one of five people charged with murder by the federal government is an illegal alien. Gaetz also asserted that illegal aliens are three times more likely to go to jail than immigrants who enter the country legally as Cuomo disputed the statement.

Gaetz again stated his position from Wednesday's hearing, saying "If you end illegal immigration, and if you had a wall, some of these people who are dead at the hands of illegal immigrants who shot them might not be. That's my whole point."

The two traded barbs after Cuomo stated that mass shootings seem to be the only type of gun crime that anyone cares about in America, with Gaetz calling the allegation "outrageous."

Cuomo countered that he wasn't referring to caring about the victims of gun violence, but of politicians taking the responsibility to do something. "You guys have never done a damn thing until it became a tool of opportunity for you to talk about immigration. These mass shootings keep happening and you do nothing except go on TV and say, 'We're not a law away.' And now you sit in front of a room of victims' parents and you talk about the wall. That's an issue," Cuomo said.

Cuomo later challenged Gaetz to name a mass shooting conducted by an illegal alien. Gaetz replied that he had listed three other shootings that didn't have multiple casualties.

"I know because now they're an item. They're an article of convenience for you," Cuomo said.

"You think it's convenient for us that people are dead at the hands of illegal aliens?!"

"Absolutely," Cuomo said.
