A couple's reaction to meeting their daughter's boyfriend has caused debate online.
A post to Reddit's "Am I The A******?" forum has gone viral after a woman (u/Practical-Buy-3266) explained the situation she and her husband found themselves in when their 20-year-old daughter brought home a much older boyfriend.
Since the post was published, it has received 12,000 upvotes. Newsweek spoke to psychotherapist Rachel Goldberg, founder of Rachel Goldberg Therapy in Studio City, California for her assessment of the situation and the parents' reaction.

The original poster (OP) explained that her daughter, Ellie, had recently started dating her boyfriend, Tom, but had been unusually secretive about him. She had not shared any pictures or detailed information, which was out of character for her, being typically quite open and honest. Despite their reservations, the OP and her husband agreed to meet Tom when Ellie brought him home during her college vacation.

...
"Ellie asked if she could bring Tom with her for a few days of the trip as they were 'getting serious', and she wanted him to meet us," the OP wrote. "Although we mentioned that we knew barely anything about him, Ellie expressed that it would be a surprise and that we'd 'love him' Given he's clearly an important part of our daughter's life, we agreed."
However, upon meeting Tom, the OP and her husband were taken aback by his age. Her husband confronted Tom, leading to a tense exchange. When Tom revealed he was 44, only two years younger than Ellie's father, the parents were stunned. The father demanded Tom leave their home, leading Ellie to defend her boyfriend and leave with him.
"Ellie shouted and said how unfair this was, and we hadn't even given Tom a chance and that he made her happy," the OP wrote.
The parents tried to reach out to Ellie and invite her back for a discussion but stated that Tom was not welcome. Ellie then opted to stay at a local hotel with Tom instead, further straining the relationship with her parents.
Viewers of the post were split in opinion over how the OP and her husband reacted.
"I was your daughter once. Nearly same age gap with the guy I was dating," one person wrote. "The absolute best thing my parents did was keep the lines of communication open between us, because as the guy started to systematically cut me off from all the other people in my life, when I finally went to cut bait, it was my parents who stepped out to catch me."
"[Not the a******]," another person wrote. "It's not the age difference that bothers me, it's the fact that Ellie lied about it and purposely springing it on you in that way in hopes that you'd be forced to not to react."
'Be as supportive as possible'
Rachel Goldberg, licensed marriage and family therapist, weighed in on the situation. Goldberg advised that while it is understandable for parents to be concerned, their reaction may have been a bit rash.
"No parent ever wants to find themselves in this position," Goldberg said. "However, the most sensible approach is to try their best not to react impulsively and to be as supportive as possible. This doesn't mean they have to approve of the relationship, but they can express their concerns while allowing their daughter to make her own decisions without punitive consequences."
Goldberg suggested that the parents could approach Ellie with a more open-minded stance, expressing their concerns without outright rejection of Tom. She gave an example of how the OP and her husband could approach their daughter:
"Hey, we know we were very reactive and kicked Tom out of the house. It's because we're very concerned about the age gap and the fact that he's your father's age. It felt a little off to us," Goldberg said. "But we do want to be supportive of the relationship if it means a lot to you, and we hope you'll give us a second chance."
The complexity of age-gap relationships
Despite encouraging the OP and her husband to consider a different approach, Goldberg pointed out the power dynamics often present in relationships with significant age gaps.
"While such relationships might have more potential if both partners are much older, it's rare for them to succeed when one partner is just coming into adulthood," she advised.
The disparity in life experience and maturity in age-gap relationships involving a young person often proves too much to remain balanced.
The OP posted an update to her story after receiving feedback from the Reddit community. She said she decided to reach out to Ellie and invite her and Tom to a neutral place for brunch to learn more about him.
"My husband remains reluctant, but I feel it's the right thing to do if we want to maintain a relationship with Ellie," she wrote. "I didn't like Tom off first impressions, and this hasn't done much to convince me. Something is just 'off' there and some of his answers solidified my thoughts about him not being right for Ellie. I suppose I'll have to remain open-minded."
