'The Conners' Premiere Spoilers: What Will Happen on ABC Show Without Roseanne Barr?

The Conner family will make their big return to ABC on Tuesday, except there will be one thing missing: the family's matriarch Roseanne Barr. However, the new series will likely have much of the same comedic gold that the original show was known for, given its talented cast.

The show's premiere will see the Conners—Dan (John Goodman), Darlene (Sara Gilbert), Becky (Lecy Goranson), D.J. (Michael Fishman), Jackie (Laurie Metcalf), Geena (Maya Lynne Robinson), Harris (Emma Kenny), Mark (Ames McNamara) and Mary (Jayden Rey)—going about their day-to-day lives in the blue-collar Illinois town of Lanford.

John Goodman revealed Barr's character was killed off for The Conners during an interview in August. The first season of the show will see the close-knit clan dealing with the aftermath of her death.

The synopsis for the premiere episode, titled, "Keep on Truckin," teased a "sudden turn of events" for the family that "forces the Conners to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never had before."

Similar to Roseanne, which covered an array of topical issues affecting society, The Conners will tackle subjects like death, drug addiction, health care and LGBTQ issues.

While the majority of the cast was sad to see Barr leave the long-running series, Gilbert said it was important for the cast to go on without her and tell the many relevant stories Americans were facing in today's climate. "We've always been fortunate to be able to represent a working-class family on television, tell stories through love, through humor, heartache and happiness and we didn't want to stop doing that and giving that to our audience," she said in an interview with ABC released Tuesday.

Barr was fired from the network after tweeting a racist comment about Valerie Jarrett, a former White House staffer in President Barack Obama's administration. The tweet and the backlash resulted in the cancelation of Roseanne, Barr's namesake show that returned to ABC for just one season in 2018 following a nine-year run starting in 1988.

The Conners premieres on ABC on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.
