Police Looking For 'Dangerous' Convicted Sex Offender Accidentally Released From Custody: 'Please Do Not Approach Him'

Canadian authorities are hunting a "dangerous" sex offender who was reportedly released from custody by accident.

Brendon Wayne Spurrell, who previously served jail time for raping a minor, was released by mistake after an administrative error sometime between Friday and Sunday, the Ottawa Citizen reported.

The 22-year-old had been found guilty for breach of probation at the Ottawa courthouse on Friday, the newspaper reported. He was supposed to remain in custody while awaiting trial on several other charges.

The Citizen reported that it was not immediately clear if Spurrell was released from the courthouse or if he was let out of the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, where he was being held.

The Ottawa Police Service issued an appeal on Monday evening, seeking the public's help in locating the fugitive.

Police warned that Spurrell is "considered dangerous" and that the public should not approach him. They added that Spurrell was wanted for "ongoing court matters," but the appeal didn't reveal details about what charges Spurrell is facing or how he managed to escape.

In an update on Thursday, police confirmed Spurrell is wanted on a judge's bench warrant and is facing charges including assault and sexual assault.

They said he was in court last Friday and "was not to be released." The "circumstances of his release are being examined by provincial authorities," police added.

The Citizen reported that Spurrell was sentenced in February last year to two years in prison for raping an underage girl.

CTV News reported that Spurrell was charged after police were alerted in September 2016 that he had contacted the 14-year-old girl on social media, befriended her and then sexually assaulted her.

According to the Citizen, he had been released on parole later in 2019, but was then arrested again and charged with more offenses.

Police describe Spurrell as a Caucasian male, 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds. He has short black hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information about his current whereabouts is urged to call 911. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 or at crimestoppers.ca.

Spurrell's release comes after a convicted child rapist who had been jailed for life was mistakenly let out of a prison in Reidsville, Georgia, last year.

Tony Maycon Munoz-Mendez was "released in error" from Rogers State Prison in October last year, the Georgia Department of Corrections said.

Munoz-Mendez was captured several days later more than 650 miles away in Kentucky, authorities said. He was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of two counts of rape in 2015, WXIA reported.
