California Husband Tries to Bury His Wife Alive at Coronado Beach—Police

A man has been arrested in California on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly attacking his wife at a beach, throwing her in the ocean than trying to bury her alive in the sand.

Coronado Police said they received a 911 call just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24, from a woman saying that her husband had just tried to kill her.

When officers arrived at the scene at 900 Block Ocean Blvd, they found the badly injured woman on the sidewalk.

Police said they believe the pair got into an argument earlier in the night, and at some point 23-year-old suspect Jose Luis Mares III began attacking his wife.

During the assault, Mares is alleged to have attempted to throw her in the ocean before trying to bury her in a hole in the sand, Coronado Police said.

"She said there was a hole in the ground and the hole had previously been there from probably kids digging it during the day. But during the struggle, she said he threw her in that hole then he began putting sand on top of her," Detective Ryan Brennan, of the Coronado Police Department, told Fox 5.

The victim added that her husband repeatedly kicked her during the attack, but stopped and ran off.

"We don't know what scared him away. Perhaps it was someone walking by," Brennan said.

The woman managed to escape and ran towards Ocean Blvd, where she was found on the sidewalk by a passerby. Paramedics arrived on scene and sent her to a trauma center in San Diego.

The suspect was located a short time later hiding in the backyard of a home on Alameda Blvd.

Mares was arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault causing great bodily injury, domestic violence, false imprisonment and parole violation.

He was being held without bail at San Diego Central Jail pending arraignment, scheduled for March 5.

The California Department of Corrections said that Mares was a parolee having previously been convicted for carjacking and burglary.

Last year, a 62-year-old man was arrested in connection with the murder of two people whose remains were discovered inside suitcases on a beach in West Seattle, Washington.

Michael Lee Dudley was arrested in August on suspicion of killing 35-year-old Jessica Lewis and 27-year-old Austin Wenner.

Dudley had been renting a room in his home to the couple at the time and is alleged to have killed the pair following an argument about rent. Dudley has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
