UPDATE 8:32 p.m. EDT—Authorities confirmed one person was killed and at least 12 others were injured in an explosion at Coryell Memorial Hospital in Gatesville, Texas, Tuesday. All those who were injured were construction workers working at the site near the explosion. The person who was killed, who was not immediately identified, was also a construction worker.

The cause of the explosion remained unclear, though officials said they believed it was an accident, according to KCEN-TV.

UPDATE 4:52 p.m. EDT—Hospital spokesperson Carly Latham confirmed to KWTX that there were injuries, some of which might be critical, after an incident at Coryell Memorial Hospital in Gatesville, Texas, Tuesday.

Latham said it appeared there were injured patients transferred to other facilities but their exact numbers and conditions remained unclear. Latham said a disaster plan was immediately put into place following the explosion and that nurses began transferring patients out and securing the area.

"We do not know if there are any fatalities," she said.

UPDATE 4:36 p.m. EDT—After reports of an explosion at Coryell Memorial Hospital in Gatesville, Texas, emergency management officials confirmed to KCEN-TV there was a building collapse and that 12 patients were evacuated to other hospitals.

There was also an active fire at the scene, KCEN reported.

Photos and videos from the scene showed black smoke billowing from the area. Initial reports suggested the explosion may have taken place at or near a construction site by the hospital. A new addition was being put in place at the facility, according to KWTX.

Authorities responded to reports of an explosion Tuesday at Coryell Memorial Hospital in Gatesville, Texas. Gatesville Police confirmed to Newsweek that there was an explosion but declined to provide further details.

Patients were being evacuated from the facility, KXXV-TV reported.

It was unclear what caused the explosion and what the extent of the damage was. It was not immediately known whether anyone was injured.

The medical facility is located west of Waco, Texas. It includes a 25-bed licensed hospital, a level-IV trauma center emergency room, primary and specialty doctors and other health care.
