Ted Cruz Says Andrew Cuomo 'Killed Tens of Thousands', Rips Chris Cuomo for 'Playing Politics' Remark

Senator Ted Cruz sharply criticized New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and his younger brother, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, on Twitter on Friday, saying the former was responsible for the deaths of "tens of thousands of New Yorkers" and then tried to cover it up.

The Texas Republican's message makes reference to the accusation that Governor Cuomo's administration obscured the amount of COVID-19-related deaths in New York state's nursing homes.

The FBI is investigating whether the administration deliberately lied about the undercounting of nursing home deaths. A directive from Governor Cuomo last spring, which required nursing homes to readmit residents who had been hospitalized with the virus after they were recovered, has also been publicly denounced by some.

Hey Chris — did your bother "believe in science" when he sent Covid-positive patients into nursing homes, killed tens of thousands of New Yorkers & then repeatedly lied about it??

Oh, I forgot, CNN won't cover that.... https://t.co/OkEBplHFbE

Cruz posted his message shortly after midnight on Friday. It came after Chris Cuomo on his program, Cuomo Prime Time, rebuked conservative politicians for not wearing protective masks on Thursday night. The anchor singled out Cruz for joining Kentucky Senator Rand Paul in "ditching his mask as they walk the halls of Congress."

Cuomo acknowledged that Cruz has been vaccinated, but noted that members of his staff and the media around him might not have received the injections yet. He then quoted CDC guidelines that recommend vaccinated people still take the precaution of wearing a mask, because, in Cuomo's words, "you can still get sick; you won't be as sick, but you can give it to somebody else."

The only way to keep COVID-19 infections down, Cuomo said, is to "listen to science." By flouting the advice of experts, he said politicians like Cruz and Paul are "just playing politics, and people are dying."

Cruz's response on Twitter reads: "Hey Chris—did your bother 'believe in science' when he sent Covid-positive patients into nursing homes, killed tens of thousands of New Yorkers & then repeatedly lied about it?? Oh, I forgot, CNN won't cover that...."

Cruz's tweet also included an embedded post from Curtis Houck, managing editor of NewsBusters.org, a website that positions itself as a watchdog against alleged liberal media bias. Houck's original tweet includes a clip of Cuomo attacking Cruz on CNN, which he captioned: "IRONY ALERT: CNN's Fredo Cuomo melts down over @TedCruz and @RandPaul not wearing masks (even though, in Cruz's case, he's been vaccinated) as examples of politicians who are 'playing politics' while 'people are dying' and prolonging the pandemic by not trusting the 'science.'"

Newsweek contacted Senator Cruz, Governor Cuomo, and Chris Cuomo for comment, but has not heard back as of press time.
