A hotel manager's amusing reaction to a customer query about breaking down the cost of a custom cake has gone viral, leaving social-media users hysterical.

Richard Logins (@Richardlogins), 38, head of operations for a hotel, was making an extra effort to help a guest, Lucy, who had requested a cake costing £280. The guest's request for a breakdown of the price led Logins to respond in a TikTok video, which has garnered almost 9,000 likes and more than 528,000 views.

"Cost to DO cake £280. Cost NOT to DO cake £0," Logins replied via email.

Logins, from London, in the U.K., told Newsweek: "We are not in the cake business, and if anyone asks for a cake, we usually direct them to other businesses who deal with cakes. But this guest insisted that we organize her a cake, two-tier, this-that-and-what-not. Guests, as much as we love them, sometimes can be very oblivious to common sense. And this was the case, with a note of rudeness."

Logins also highlighted the difficulty of providing a detailed cost breakdown, likening it to asking for such a thing at a hairdresser. "You wouldn't usually ask for a breakdown of the price of hair color," he said.

"This doesn't make me feel any kind of way, but, at the end of the day, we are dealing with human beings, and as much as the majority of us are bright, some of us are thick as cheese," Logins added.

How Cake Costs Are Broken Down

For those wondering how cakes are priced in professional bakeries, The Station Bakery outlines the various components that go into determining the cost. Ingredients such as flour, sugar, and eggs form the base cost, but labor, overheads like electricity and water, and even packaging contribute significantly.

Skilled bakers also factor in the complexity of the design and time required, especially for elaborate cakes such as multitiered creations. Accurate pricing ensures profitability while reflecting the value of artistry and effort that goes into each cake.

Social Media Reactions

Logins' witty retort has sparked a debate online. Some found his response hilarious, while others sided with the guest, believing it to be a "genuine question."

"Why can't you do a costing of ingredients and then one for labor? It's a simple question," Susie commented, siding with Lucy.

Meanwhile, others supported Logins. Chloe posted: "I'd never dream of asking for a cake cost breakdown lol [laugh out loud]. The price is X – I either want it or I don't."

Another user, Emma, added humor to the discussion: "How do you break down a cake? Cost per pound of flour and icing?"

Jamie also backed Logins: "Love your response! Many in these comments just don't seem to get it. This is artistry. You don't give a breakdown for that."
