Veteran journalist and news anchor Dan Rather launched a scathing attack on Donald Trump Saturday, after the president insulted NBA star LeBron James and CNN's Don Lemon in a tweet.

In the tweet late Friday, Trump had described Lemon as "the dumbest man on television."

"He made Lebron (sic) look smart, which isn't easy to do," tweeted the president, referring to an interview broadcast on CNN earlier in the week.

Former CBS news anchor Rather was incredulous in a tweet early Saturday.

"This is apparently what the President of the United States feels the need to share with the world at what should be long past his bedtime? It's a disgrace. It's racist. And it's the product of petty but dangerous hatreds. I repeat this is the PRESIDENT??!?"

Trump launched his attack in response to Lemon's interview with James which aired Monday on CNN, in which the LA Lakers star had criticized the president and accused him of using sport as part of a divisive political agenda.

James remarked Trump is "using sports to kinda divide us, and that's something that I can't relate to."

"Sports has never been something that divides people. It's always been something that brings someone together," he said.

When asked what he would say to Trump if face-to-face with him, James said "I would never sit across from him."

James was being interviewed about a school he has helped to set up for disadvantaged children in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

Lemon in a tweet Saturday hit back at the president.

"Who's the real dummy? A man who puts kids in classrooms or one who puts kids in cages? #BeBest," tweeted the CNN anchor, referring to the Trump administration's policy of separating children from their undocumented migrant parents at the border.

James has not responded to Trump's tweet.
