Todd Meadows, a cast member on the long-running reality series Deadliest Catch, has died at the age of 25 after reportedly falling overboard.

Rick Shelford, the captain of the Aleutian Lady, announced on Monday in a post on Facebook and Instagram that Meadows, who was a deckhand on the ship, died on February 25. He called it “the most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady on the Bering Sea.”

Meadows was the newest member of the Aleutian Lady crew, Shelford wrote.

“He quickly became family. His love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away. His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always,” Shelford said in his tribute.

“Todd’s love for his children, his family, and his life was evident in everything he did. He worked hard, loved deeply, and brought joy to those around him.”

What Happened?

According to the Associated Press, Meadows died after falling overboard about 170 miles north of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, as reported by the U.S. Coast Guard, who was notified of the incident after 5 p.m. on February 25.

“He was recovered unresponsive by the crew approximately ten minutes later,” Chief Petty Officer Travis Magee, a spokesperson with the Coast Guard’s Arctic District, told Associated Press in an email on Tuesday. Efforts to resuscitate the 25-year-old crab fisherman were unsuccessful, and the crew brought his body to Dutch Harbor, Magee said.

Crab fishing in the Bering Sea is an extremely dangerous activity, as the weather is unpredictable off the coast of Alaska, especially in winter; the equipment used by workers in icy, windy conditions is heavy; and their shifts are often long and exhausting.

Between 2000 and 2009, an average of 12 crab fisherman died each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Meadows is also not the first Deadliest Catch star who has died on the job.

In 2021, Todd Kochutin, a crew member of the Patricia Lee, died aged 30 as a result of injuries suffered while aboard the ship, according to his obituary.

Phil Harris, a captain of the fishing vessel Cornelia Marie, featured on the show, died in 2010 at the age of 53 after suffering a stroke while filming the show’s sixth season, as reported by NPR.

Who Was Todd Meadows?

Meadows was in his first year as a cast member on Deadliest Catch, which follows crab fishermen working in the harsh environment of the Bering Sea during the Alaskan king crab and snow crab fishing seasons.

The 25-year-old from Montesano, Washington, had started filming for the Discovery Channel series last May, but no episode for the new season featuring him has aired yet.

In a statement by Discovery Channel which has been widely circulated, the company said Meadows’ death was “a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time.”

A GoFundMe page set up after his death described Meadows as “a determined dad to three amazing little boys who were his entire world. Everything he did was for them—their smiles, their futures, and the memories they will carry with them.”

The page has already raised more than $36,000 in donations that should help cover for Meadows’ funeral expenses and support his family in the months ahead.

“This unimaginable loss has left his children without their father, his parents without their son, his siblings without their brother and his family broken,” the GoFundMe page reads. “Any donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward honoring his life and ensuring his boys are cared for in the way he would have wanted.”

“Todd will forever be part of this boat, this crew, and this brotherhood,” Shelford wrote in his tribute on social media. “Though we lost him far too soon, his legacy will live on through his children and in every memory we carry of him.”

Rozlyn Meadows, Todd’s sibling, responded to Shelford’s post on Facebook thanking him for his heartfelt tribute.

“Thank you for your kind words, my brother loved you and the team so much,” she wrote. “When he came back the last time he told me all about you guys and how much you helped him. You were all so good to him and I’m so glad he had such a good crew.”
