Deadly Shame

FOR GEN. RATKO MLADIC, THE Bosnian Serb army commander, the tragedy of the war has struck home. On March 24, four days before he began massing troops around the Muslim safe haven of Gorazde, Mladic's only daughter committed suicide. Ana Mladic, a 23-year-old medical student, shot herself in her family's apartment in Belgrade. Serbian newspapers say she was distraught over attacks on her father as a war criminal. Though she stubbornly defended her father, she had told him that she planned to work in a Sarajevo hospital after she graduated from med school this June.
