One of the highlights of the Delta Air Lines SkyMiles program is members’ ability to earn miles from commercial interactions with Delta’s partner brands, including Uber, Starbucks and Airbnb. Today, the airline announced changes to its Starbucks affiliation program in response to customer feedback.

"At Delta, we're constantly listening to our Members and looking for ways SkyMiles can create more value in their everyday lives. One thing is clear: Members value earning opportunities that are rewarding and easy to engage with, and this update delivers on that," Joshua Kaehler, managing director of SkyMiles loyalty partnerships told Newsweek.

He continued: "Starbucks is already woven into many daily routines, and by enhancing how Members earn miles on Starbucks purchases, we’re strengthening the relationship between two brands they use regularly and extending the value of SkyMiles beyond travel. It's a simple idea: everyday habits should bring Members closer to their next trip."

When Delta launched its partnership with Starbucks in 2022, registered SkyMiles members earned 1 mile for every $1 spent at participating Starbucks locations. In 2024, the model changed, giving SkyMiles members 25 miles when they reloaded their card with $25-49.99, 75 miles with a $50-74.99 re-up, 125 miles for $75-99.99 in funds added and 200 miles when $100 supplements an existing balance.

Starting August 5, Delta and Starbucks will return to the original model, giving linked Delta SkyMiles and Starbucks Rewards members 1 mile per $1 spent at participating Starbucks coffeehouses.

Some existing benefits will remain as part of the modified program. Double Stars on Delta travel days and access to exclusive offers and experiences will continue.

There are a few caveats. To be eligible for the program, a SkyMiles Member must have flown on a qualifying Delta flight within the last 12 months. Those that haven’t flown in that time period are still eligible to receive points through October 5, 2026.

There are over 41,000 Starbucks locations globally. According to 2024 reporting by CNBC, Starbucks locations in airports are part of the company's licensed location portfolio, similar to those inside Target stores. That portfolio makes up approximately 40% of the company's footprint. There are Starbucks locations in 47 of the 50 busiest airports in the U.S.
