Demaryius Thomas Tributes Flood in as NFL Fans Mourn Death of Broncos Star

Tributes poured in on Thursday and Friday for Demaryius Thomas, a four-time NFL Pro Bowler with the Denver Broncos, who died at the aged 33 at his home in Rosewell, Georgia.

Thomas was found dead in his home on Thursday night, the Roswell Police Department confirmed in a statement to NFL Media.

Tim Lupo of Rosewell Police told CNN that based on preliminary information, the former NFL player's death was caused by a medical issue.

The Broncos said in a statement that they were "devastated and completely heartbroken by the sudden, tragic passing of Demaryius."

"During nine seasons in Denver, Demaryius established himself as a dominant, record-setting wide receiver who was an instrumental part of two championship runs and our victory in Super Bowl 50. His legacy as a Bronco extended far beyond the playing field as a caring, generous member of our community."

"Demaryius' humility, warmth, kindness and infectious smile will always be remembered by those who knew him and loved him."

"We have lost an incredible player and a special person in Demaryius Thomas. Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to the Thomas family and all who are grieving this unimaginable loss."

The NFL issued a statement saying, "The NFL family mourns the tragic loss of Demaryius Thomas and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones."

Steve Atwater, former Denver Broncos player, tweeted: "RIP #DemaryiusThomas. My heart is hurting right now. We'll never forget you my brother."

Erica Cobb, host of the Daily Blast Live, tweeted a photo of her and Thomas.

"I will remember you for teaching me, for my first time away from home, to find home and family in places that weren't innately my own. I hope people remember your pure heart, because I certainly will. R.I.P."

9News host Kyle Clark tweeted: "Demaryius Thomas had a unique bond with young Broncos fans. You could see it in every interaction. He wrote in the Players Tribune about his difficult childhood and what love means to a child. "If you are loved, you'll make it out."

Thomas was born on December 25, 1987, in Montrose, Georgia. From high school, he was recognised a gifted athlete, winning multiple awards in basketball, football and track.

He began his career in the NFL with the Denver Broncos in 2010, after playing for the Georgia Tech team as a receiver between 2007 and 2009. He finished his career at Georgia Tech with 120 receptions for 2,339 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Thomas won two AFC championships and Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos. He is second all-time in Broncos history in receiving yards and was a five-time Pro Bowl selection.

During the 2018 season, Thomas went to the Houston Texans, before having a brief stint at New England Patriots. He later ended his career with the New York Jets – retiring from the NFL in June 2021.

Thomas had 724 catches for 9,763 yards and 63 touchdowns in 143 career games.

In 2015, President Barack Obama commuted the sentence of the NFL player's mother, Katrina Stuckey Smith, who was 15 years into a 20 year federal sentence for drug distribution. Obama later commuted the sentence of Thomas' Grandmother Minne Thomas, who was serving life for cocaine trafficking.
