'Destiny 2' Chalice Upgrade Guide - How to Farm Imperials Fast & Use Maps

Destiny 2 Season of Opulence began Tuesday afternoon, and many Guardians are still trying to figure out the intricacies of the Chalice of Opulence. In this guide, we'll explain how to upgrade your Chalice using Imperials and show how Imperial Maps might help.

Getting on the Upgrade Path

Once you start the Invitation quest and get through the initial steps you're prompted to go to the Conflux Lost Sector on Nessus where you'll have your first encounter with Imperials. Those who don't know where that is can feel free to use the map below. Just run through the Sector and open the Chest of Imperials at its usual location. When you do, you'll be prompted to use the Imperials to unlock the Gear Archetype Rune Slot.

The next step is to finish the Glorious Harvest Bounty, which has the following requirements.

  • Generate Orbs of Light (out of 100 percent).
  • Earn experience (out of 100 Percent).
  • Complete any Challenge: This request may be confusing for some Guardians. In this instance a Challenge refers to anything that yields Powerful Gear like an Ascendant Challenge, Heroic Story Mission or Flashpoint.

Accomplish those tasks and you'll be asked to find the Imperial Treasure Map Location in the Well of Flames. This doesn't have anything to do with getting Imperials per se, but it puts you on the path toward having free reign to earn them.

Once you have the map, use the Cistern Fast Travel point right next to the Conflux. From there, go up the staircase ahead of you. The video above details the exact path you should take to reach the end. Chest opened, simply complete a single round of the Menagerie. From there, the Imperial collection grind truly begins.

How to farm and earn Imperials in Destiny 2

Imperials are arguably the most precious commodity in Season of the Opulence, which means they're pretty hard to get. Here are some basic rules of thumb to help you on your upgrade journey.

  • Complete Werner Bounties: New Werner Bounties offer the chance to earn around 400 Imperials per week.
  • Weekly Bounties: Complete Weekly Bounties to get even more Imperials.
  • Menagerie Triumphs: There's a new section in your Triumphs menu dedicated specifically to Menagerie. Complete these tasks to get purses of Imperials.
  • Wealth of the Emperor: Using the above methods, purchase the Power and Efficiency II upgrade from Werner as soon as possible. It offers access to the Wealth of the Emperor consumable that allows Imperials to drop from Strikes, Gambit and Crucible with an additional increase to your Menagerie yield.

As far as the path to upgrading your Chalice is concerned, that largely depends on personal preference. Above all, however, your first upgrades should almost always be the first two Rune slots as well as Power and Efficiency II. After that, the choice is yours to make.

  • Rune Compatibility: Allows you to slot different colored Runes to get different Menagerie rewards. If you're looking for Head Armor, Hand cannons or sidearms, for example, then it may be worth it to prioritize Rune Compatibility II. This is more about specific types of gear.
  • Rune Bonus: You'll get more Runes, which let you customize the traits of the gear as opposed to the base gear type.
  • Power and Efficiency: Pertains to getting more Imperials and Powerful Rewards. This is the one upgrade path all Guardians should have at least moderate focus on.

The only thing included in the Chalice upgrade path that may be slightly optional is the third Rune Slot. If you're a more casual Guardian who doesn't care as much about Masterwork gear, then maybe save your Imperials for some of these other categories first. That's the basics of upgrading the Chalice of Opulence in Destiny 2. For more on the Season of Opulence, check out our starter Season of Opulence guide.
