Actor Diedrich Bader Shares Touching Message After Losing Dog to Cancer

Actor Diedrich Bader shared the heartbreaking news of the death of his dog at the weekend, gaining huge support online from fellow dog-lovers.

Bader's sausage dog, named Basil Rathbone, was a great joy in his family life, according to posts on his social media acounts.

The dog tragically died in 55-year-old Batman voice actor Bader's arms on June 2 after suffering with liver cancer. Bader shared the news to Twitter in a post that has since received over 120,000 likes.

"This little guy died in my arms tonight from liver cancer. The only dog i've ever known to kiss other dogs, he was the absolute sweetest soul and a lovey and such a good, good boy," read the tweet, paired with a wholesome photo. Basil Rathbone was photographed lying outside in the sun.

Bader has updated followers with information and adorable photos of the dog throughout his life, including one hilarious comparison between Basil Rathbone and Benedict Cumberbatch, who he says look alike. "Was it kismet?" he asked in the tweet.

Liver cancer is one of the rarer forms of the disease in dogs. According to the National Cancer Institute, around 6 million dogs are diagnosed with cancer each year, and the Veterinary Cancer Society estimates that around one in four dogs will develop cancer at some point in their lives.

Messages of Support

The replies to the actor's viral tweet were overwhelmingly wholesome, as fellow dog-owners shared their own similar anecdotes of lost loved canines and sent messages of support.

"I'm so sorry for your loss. We lost our little guy in 2019. I held him when a heart condition finally took him. It's never easy to lose such a dear little friend," wrote @joemorin73.

"This is Bella. She was 14.5 years old. We adopted her from our neighbor when she went into assisted living - no pets! She had lymphoma. She was the sweetest girl, but no kisses," tweeted @jamatlarge28.

"Shelby, sweet lover of all beasts, four or two legged, left us Tuesday afternoon. She made my life better every day," shared @formerdirtdart.

"I'm so sorry. I lost Bo to the same. It snuck in and moved fast. He's showing your baby all the cool spots and best snacks," wrote @moustratus.

"Basil Rathbone: what a delight he must've been. Our main man Robertitio passed in my arms in 2019, and he's still missed, but always remembered with love. Heart is with you and yours this weekend."
