It can be both a blessing and a curse when a footballer shines on the international stage.

Dimitri Payet was rarely less than brilliant for West Ham United last season, but he kicked his performances up a notch at UEFA Euro 2016, putting in a series of superlative displays as France reached the final, losing to Portugal.

Now the London club, which moves to the Olympic Stadium in Stratford for this season, could find it difficult to hold onto its star player.

France Football and the football website Top Mercato link the attacking midfielder with a move to join up with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

Of course, Mourinho has already spent heavily this summer on a player who occupies Payet's position, Henrikh Mkhitaryan. And Inter Milan is also understood to be interested.

But Mourinho appears intent on a squad clear-out and needs strength in depth. Payet would make United's summer transfer business even more impressive.
