New 'Doctor Who' Teaser Reveals Jodie Whittaker's Doctor Has Three Companions

Three companions will be joining Jodie Whittaker's Doctor in the upcoming 11th season, and a new Doctor Who teaser focuses on them. The BBC released the new sneak peek during the World Cup final on Sunday.

The teaser offers a look at the three new characters: Tosin Cole's Ryan, Mandip Gill's Yasmin and Bradley Walsh's Graham. They are all going about their everyday lives when they are unknowingly touched in some way by the presence of Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor. She takes food from Ryan's plate, refills Yasmin's empty pizza box and switches Graham's newspaper with a children's comic magazine.

"These three new characters complete a new and utterly unmissable team aboard the Tardis," Controller of BBC Drama Piers Wenger said when the BBC announced the casting in October 2017.

According to the series' new showrunner, Chris Chibnall, the decision to have three companions as opposed to the usual one or two is about keeping Doctor Who "inclusive." "I wanted to feel that everybody who tunes in, around the world, has a character they can relate to," he said, Entertainment Weekly reported on Sunday.

Because the Doctor is an alien, a Time Lord with the ability to regenerate, multiple actors have played the role. The series first ran from 1963 to 1989. The relaunch began in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor. Tennant played the Tenth Doctor, Matt Smith the Eleventh and Peter Capaldi the Twelfth. The Twelfth Doctor became Whittaker's Thirteenth at the end of the 2017 Christmas Special.

The Doctor doesn't travel through time and space in a time machine, the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), alone. Before officially meeting the new companions when Season 11 premieres this fall, catch up on the major characters who have traveled with the Doctor since the relaunch.

Rose Tyler (Ninth and Tenth Doctors)

She was a 19-year-old salesperson when she first crossed paths with the Ninth Doctor and learned about the existence of aliens. She was played by Billie Piper.

Martha Jones (Tenth Doctor)

She was a doctor whose first adventure with the Doctor involved the hospital where she worked being transported to the Moon by aliens. She was played by Freema Agyeman.

Donna Noble (Tenth Doctor)

She first met the Doctor on her wedding day and learned about aliens. After that, she crossed paths with him again while investigating strange events. She was played by Catherine Tate.

Amy Pond and Rory Williams (Eleventh Doctor)

The Doctor and the TARDIS crash-landed in Amy's yard when she was a child, but it wasn't until she was an adult that she went traveling with him. Rory, her husband, later joined them. Amy was played by Karen Gillan and Rory by Arthur Darvill.

Clara Oswald (Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors)

Jenna Coleman appeared in two episodes as two different characters before the Doctor encountered her as Clara. That mystery was explained when Clara entered the Doctor's timeline to save him and different versions of her were spread throughout his history.

Bill Potts (Twelfth Doctor)

Bill was working on a college campus and sitting in on the Doctor's classes when she encountered him and learned who he really was. She was played by Pearl Mackie.
