A woman has been praised by the internet for saving a dog who was one day away from being euthanized.

Cayla Bri, 27, from Houston, Texas, spotted a Staffordshire terrier mix on the Instagram page of a shelter worker and had to have her.

Bri posted in the Reddit thread r/pitbulls and said: "My new rescue she was one day away from euthanasia! Any name suggestions for her?" in a post which garnered 6,000 upticks.

"Most dogs at shelters in the south get put on a two-week timer because the amount of stray dogs in the area is so overwhelming.

"If the dog isn't fostered, paid to be kept alive, or adopted, they will be euthanized regardless of their age or breed," Bri told Newsweek. Newsweek could not verify these details.

The city of Houston's BARC animal shelter, which says it is at "critical" capacity, routinely publishes a list of animals considered as urgent cases, who are at imminent risk of being put down. This includes a substantial amount of long-stay animals who have been in the shelter for 15 days or longer. The city of San Antonio also publishes a similar list, in which the stays of at-risk dogs are on average significantly shorter, i.e. fewer than 10 days.

In 2023, a total of 82,681 cats and dogs were euthanized in Texas shelters (out of 568,325 entered) due to food shortages, low budgets or lack of community interest, according to Best Friends Animal Society, a dog rescue nonprofit.

The organization is working toward making the U.S. a no-kill country, which means euthanasia would only be used when absolutely necessary.

This pup was one of the lucky ones. The content creator revealed she named her Miss Cocoa. She now has a sister, a 1-year-old rescue dog, Barbie, which she saved from the street last year.

"She has a calm and happy personality and just wants to cuddle and spend time with me.

"She wiggles her whole body and bounces around when she gets excited and loves belly rubs. She loves cuddling in bed and snores but I still love her," Bri said.

Redditers shared similar sweet tales of their rescue dogs and shared name suggestions.

"Two years ago my fiancé and I saved a lab/pittie mix one day away from euthanasia and named him exactly this. Best decision we've ever made," said Reddit user own_lemon_5645.

"I had a white lab/staffy, until two weeks ago when he went to keep my father in law company in the afterlife. He looked so much like these with the floppy ears and everything. Miss that little rascal," said HaggisLad.

"I love seeing death row puppers find a home. My first rescue was 48 hours away from being put down. He was my best friend for the next 13 years and just the best boy. His name was Jude after the Beatles song," said Thatsmyredditidkyou.

One user suggested the name "Lickitung," to honor her ginormous tongue in the photo accompanying the post.

"Belle. As in Saved by the Bell," one user suggested.

"Or Elle/El, as in 'eleventh hour.' Same idea and rhymes with Belle," user SicDigital offered as a suggestion.
