Dogs can be extraordinary protectors who keep their owners safe from all kinds of threats, including one golden retriever who takes her role incredibly seriously. In fact, nothing will get passed Comet—not even an ice pack.

The hilarious moment was shared on Comet's dedicated TikTok page (@peachycomet22), showing how desperately she tried to protect owner Andrea Olsen from a terrifying ice pack. During the video, Olsen, 42, stretched her leg out after spraining an ankle and was given a cold compress to prevent swelling.

That wasn't going to get past Comet's security, however, as she quickly carried the ice pack away in her mouth. Olsen still isn't sure why Comet was so persistent, but told Newsweek that she wonders if it was "because it was too cold."

Olsen repeatedly took the ice pack out of Comet's mouth and placed it back on her ankle—only for the diligent dog to cautiously remove it once again. She certainly wasn't going to risk her owner's safety under any circumstances.

Olsen said: "When we are injured, she is definitely protective. I broke my leg a couple of years ago and she laid next to it for weeks."

When Comet eventually gave up removing the ice pack, she settled for lying beside Olsen and later fell asleep on her leg.

The video has gone viral since it was posted on April 26, receiving more than one million views and over 69,000 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.

Bred for hunting and field work, golden retrievers simply love to work. If they have a role to fulfil, they will undoubtedly be happy. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says that they tend to take a playful approach toward life and even into their adult years. It's just part of their nature to be so joyful and excited.

This particular trait is also what makes golden retrievers so eager to please their owners too. After all, they're not just loyal and energetic, but they also want to do right by their family.

It doesn't matter whether it's being a guide dog, cuddling up on the couch, or protecting their owner from a horrifying pack of ice—golden retrievers are bound to take their job very seriously.

Comet certainly likes to look out for her owners at all times.

"Dogs can sense when someone is hurt and feel it's their job to make them feel better," Olsen said.

"When I fell to the ground after rolling my ankle, Comet immediately laid on top of my body. When my husband Kevin was helping me back up, she also jumped all over him. She knew I was hurt and was nervous for anyone to touch me," she said.

TikTok users hailed the dog's caring instincts, leading to more than 200 comments on the video at the time of writing.

One reads: "He is retrieving! Let the retriever retrieve!"

Another user wrote: "Comet just wanted to give it to you himself, not from Dad lol."

A third viewer joked: "Clearly dad's confused. Glad the pup was here to help."

One commenter added: "The cutest nurse I have ever seen!"
