Staking one's claim to a patch of the net is no longer free. InterNIC Registration Services, which registers domain names (like newsweek.com)-the Internet equivalent of a street address-was previously funded through a government grant from the National Science Foundation. The NSF is no longer subsidizing registration fees, so Network Solutions, which owns InterNic, will begin charging domain name holders $50 per year (these fees do not apply to users who have accounts with Internet providers like Prodigy or CompuServe). We knew it was too good to last.
